Cardinals compete at home meet

Don Hoppel Co-Ed Relays
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls hosted the Don Hoppel Co-Ed Relays on Monday May 2. The girls placed fourth in the eight-team field with 70 points. Osage won the meet with 163 points.
Jillian Heitland was the only Cardinal to win an event. She won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.14.
GHV had two individuals and two relays place as runner-ups. Jayden Hughes was second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.64. Hannah Lau was second in the high jump with a leap of 4’10”. The 4x100 meter relay consisting of Amanda Bierle, Leah Meinders, Jacki Van Oort and Hughes ran the race in 54.43. The sprint medley team of Hughes, Meinders, Van Oort and Sadie Oulman were also second. They ran the race in 1:58.91.
Other events earning points for the Cardinals included:
•Shuttle Hurdle: Miranda Jackson, Maddie Williams, Mara Anderson, Heitland, third, 1:11.47
•Distance medley: Oulman, Meinders, Van Oort, Williams, fourth, 4:33.59
•High jump: Emma Whelan, fourth, 4’4”
•1500 meter run: Rebekah Larson, fifth, 5:57.16
•3000 meter run: Nicole Upmeyer, sixth, 14:01.62
•100 meter hurdles: Heitland, sixth, 17.66
•Long jump: Bierle, sixth, 13’10”
Top of Iowa
Conference Meet
It was a successful day for the GHV girls when they competed in the Top of Iowa Conference Meet held on Thursday, May 5, at North Union High School. The girls placed fourth in the nine-team field with 104 points. West Hancock won the meet with 140 points.
The team racked up a lot of points in the relay events. Two relay teams ended with championships. The 4x400 meter team won with a time of 4:21.03. Members of the relay were Maddie Williams, Jacki Van Oort, Jillian Heitland and Sadie Oulman. The Distance Medley team of Oulman, Leah Meinders, Van Oort and Williams won with a time of 4:39.78.
The Cardinals had two runners place in the 400 meter hurdles. Heitland was second with a time of 1:10.70 and Mara Anderson was fourth in 1:15.70. The team also collected a lot of points in the 100 meter dash with a third and fourth place finish. Jayden Hughes was third with a time of 13.73, and Meinders finished fourth in 14.01. Amanda Bierle and Emma Whelan finished fifth and seventh respectively in the 200 meter dash. Bierle ran the race in 29.46 and Whelan clocked a 29.87.
