GHV falls to Denver and Mason City

It was another rough week for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys soccer team, as they dropped two matches.

Denver 4, GHV 2

Although the Cardinals had topped Denver earlier in the season, Tuesday night, May 17, didn’t go the same way.

The game was closer than the score indicates.  The score was tied, 2-2, with 15-minutes remaining in the game.  Denver stepped it up and scored twice in the remaining minutes to win the match, 4-2.

“We just didn’t have enough depth for this match,” said Coach Eric Williams.  “Denver was full strength and we had some injuries which led us to only having one substitute.”

Ryan Myers and Patrick Terhark each scored a goal for the Cardinals.  Connor Burke had five shots on goal, while Myers and Terhark had two apiece and Turner Albertson had one shot on goal.

Goalie Aidan McRobie had 11 saves in the match.

“This match gave us a lot of experience, especially for the underclassman,” said Williams.

Mason City 2, GHV 1

It was another close match for the Cardinals when they faced Mason City on the road on Friday, May 20.

Following a slow first half, GHV came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and made it competitive.  Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Mason City was able to hold on and take the 2-1 victory.

“This was another good match,” said Coach Eric Williams.  “I love watching and coaching competitive, clean soccer.”

Connor Burke scored the Cardinals’ lone goal.  Burke had three shots on goals, while Patrick Terhard had two and Ryan Myers and Colton Schroeder each had one shot on goal.

Aidan McRobie had nine saves at the goalie position, while Brady Hess had one save.

“The young men didn’t give up, even in the end when we had a couple of opportunities to score and send it to overtime but just couldn’t connect,” said Williams.
