GHV’s Smith places second

The State Track Meet is a time for memories to be made.  The week proved to be a mixed bag of emotions for Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys track team.

A highlight of the meet was freshman Reece Smith placing second in the 3200 meter run and scoring eight points for the team.  Smith ran the race in 9:46.32.  This was the third fastest time in GHV school history.

The person who holds the second fastest time in school history happens to be Reece’s brother, Chase.  Chase, who is a senior, also competed in the 3200 meter run.  Unfortunately for Chase, the day didn’t end as well.  Chase had to pull out of the race after the first mile due to an injured achilles.

“Chase finished his career with the second fastest time in school history in the 3200 at 9:45.77,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.

Also competing for GHV at the State meet was Sam Cataldo and Logan Dalbeck.

Cataldo, a senior, qualified for the State Meet in two events.  He placed ninth in the 400 meter hurdles with a personal best time

of 55.38.  This was the third best time in school history.  He also placed ninth in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.68.  He finishes his career with the fifth fastest time in school history with a time of 15.55.

Dalbeck placed 14th in the 1600 meter run with a personal best time of 4:36.62.  The time placed him in 10th place in school history for the event.  Dalbeck, a junior, will have another chance at a State trip next year.
