Richard Furleigh

Richard “Dick” Furleigh, 84, of Oelwein, Iowa,, died on Friday evening, May 13, 2016, at Mercy Living Plus, in Oelwein.

Family and friends will gather from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2016, at the Oelwein American Legion Hall to celebrate Dick’s life.

Richard George Furleigh was born on July 25, 1931 in Clear Lake, the son of Philip Howard and Anna (Heidenreich) Furleigh.  Dick graduated from Clear Lake High School and continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.  He honorable served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Dick was married to Marian Rose Stepleton on June 4, 1955 in Clear Lake.  They lived at Ventura and then moved to Oelwein in 1965.  Dick and Marian later divorced.  Dick was a traveling salesman for M & W Farm Equipment and Speedy Manufacturing.  He later sold advertising for Upper Midwest Publications.  Dick married Dorothy Anna (Schaefer) Heidt on Oct. 10, 1997 in West Union, Iowa.  He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post #9.  Dick enjoyed his time at the American Legion working on the baseball program and calling bingo.

Dick is survived by his daughter, Kaye Furleigh (John Point), of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; two sons, Pat (Karen) Furleigh, of Des Moines, Iowa, and & Daniel (Jessica) Heidt, of Oelwein; several grandchildren and great -grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Pederson, of Lake Mills, Iowa and Roberta (Dick) Goodman, of Urbandale, Iowa; two Brothers, Frank (Gail) Furleigh, of Texas City, Texas and Jim (Mary) Furleigh, of Fallbrook, Calif.; two step-sons, Darrell (Rebecca) Heidt, Jr. of Arlington, Iowa, and David (Kristy) Heidt, of Oelwein; two step-daughters, Kim Eckhardt, of Arlington and Lynda Heidt (Norm Taylor), of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy (Aug. 21, 2015); son, Michael; three brothers  Patrick, Jack and Tom; and a brother-in-law, Stanley Pederson.
