Tough week for the GHV girls

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura softball team couldn’t have had a much harder week, as they dropped all their games, two in shut-outs.

Bishop Garrigan 10, GHV 0 (6)

It was a tough night for the Cardinals when Bishop Garrigan came to town on Wednesday, June 22.  The Golden Bears recorded a 10-0 shut-out against GHV in six innings.

Ashley Markla pitched all six innings and took the loss on the mound.  She gave up eight hits, walked six and struck-out three.

Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Markla were the only GHV players to get a hit off Bishop Garrigan pitcher Aubree Altman.

Algona 22, GHV 5 (5)

The hard knocks weren’t over yet for the Cardinals, when they hosted Algona on Thursday, June 23. Cardinal pitchers gave up 18 hits, as they fell to the Bulldogs, 22-5, in five innings.

Algona’s bats were firing on all cylinders, as they scored 10 runs in the six inning alone.

Bailee Pitzenberger started the game and pitched 5.67 innings for the Cardinals.  She gave up 17 hits and 20 runs.  She walked seven and struck-out four.  Ashley Markla provided some relief.  She gave up one hit, allowed two runs, walked two and had no strike-outs.

The Cardinal offense tried hard, recording three doubles and seven singles in the game.  Payton Bamrick recorded a single, a double, had one RBI and scored a run.  Mackenzie Van Gerpen also had a single, double, and one RBI.  Pitzenberger was the other player to record a double.

Scoring one run apiece was Megan Oetken, Bamrick, Katie Oetken, Abby Kale, Pitzenberger and Trinity Smith.

Lake Mills 12, GHV 0 (4)

The Lake Mills Bulldogs opened the game with 10 runs in the first inning on the way to a 12-0 shut-out against the Cardinals on Friday, June 24, in Lake Mills.

The Bulldogs scored 12 runs on nine hits.  GHV couldn’t manage anything on offense.  The Lake Mills pitcher threw a perfect game, striking out six, and walking none.

Ashley Markla pitched two innings for the Cardinals.  She gave up three hits and two runs.  She struck out two and walked one.  Bailee Pitzenberger pitched one inning.  She gave up six hits, 10 runs and walked six.

GHV Tournament

The Cardinals hosted a tournament on Saturday, June 25.  GHV lost two games in the tourney.

GHV fell to Newman Catholic, 8-1.

The Cardinals scored on a single by Miranda Jackson that brought in Jayden Hughes. A highlight of the game was a triple by Payton Bamrick.  Bamrick also had a single.  Abby Kale and Betshaida Larson also had singles.

Bailee Pitzenberger started the game on the mound.  She pitched one inning and gave up two hits and three runs.  Ashley Markla finished the game and pitched four innings.  She struck out one, walked one and gave up six hits and five runs.

GHV lost a close one to West Fork, 6-5.   

Markla pitched the entire game.  She struck-out four, walked three and allowed 11 hits.

The Cardinals weren’t having trouble collecting hits, as they connected on 14 hits, compared to 11 for West Fork.  Mackenzie Van Gerpen led the team, with two doubles and a single.  Bamrick also had three hits, all singles.  Jackson led the team in RBIs with two on two singles.

Eagle Grove 11, GHV 7

Eagle Grove came to town on Monday, June 27, and handed the Cardinals a 11-7 loss.

Ashley Markla recorded the loss.  She pitched six innings.  She gave up eight hits and 10 runs and she walked seven.  Bailee Pitzenberger provided some relief.  She pitched one inning and gave up three hits and one run.

Recording two hits apiece were Payton Bamrick, Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Katie Oetken.  Bamrick, Van Gerpen and Abby Kale all had one RBI.

Jayden Hughes recorded two stolen bases.
