Cardinals continue to roll

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura baseball team continues to roll with two more Top of Iowa Conference victories last week. The Cardinals stay atop the TIC West Division with an 12-2 mark. GHV has an overall record of 15-8. Under first year coach Shawn Schlechter, the Cardinals are not only impressing their fans, but other teams as well.
Newman 11, GHV 7
The Cardinals gave it all they had in the batter’s box and outhit Newman Catholic, 10-8, they just couldn’t get the runs across the plate to win the game. The Knights won the contest on Tuesday, June 21, 11-7.
Newman took an early lead after the fourth innings, 8-2.
The Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to five, 11-6. RBI singles by Cade Bamrick, Colton Schroeder, and Payton James, and a groundout by Nick Joynt sparked a GHV comeback, but it was a little too late.
Schroeder was the game’s losing pitcher. He allowed eight runs in 3.2 innings on the mound. He walked seven and struck out four. Also pitching for the Cardinals was Anthony Sherwood and Joynt. Sherwood walked three and struck out one.
Cade Bamrick led the team at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. He doubled in the fifth and singled in the sixth inning. He also scored two runs.
Harley Forry had two hits and scored one run.
GHV 8, Bishop Garrigan 6
The Cardinals came out ready to play when they played Bishop Garrigan on Wednesday, June 22. GHV scored five runs in the first inning on their way to an 8-6 win.
Payton James started the Cardinal scoring with a bases loaded walk, followed by a two-run single by Ryan Meyers and an RBI single by Harley Forry.
Bishop Garrigan got a spark from a solo home run in the third inning to close its deficit, 5-2. The Cardinals put up two runs of their own in the third on two RBI singles by Cade Bamrick and Colton Schroeder.
Meyers led the team on the mound and at the plate. He was the team’s winning pitcher. He struck out six, walked four and surrendered six hits. He racked up two RBIs on two hits.
Bamrick also had two hits and he scored two runs and had one RBI. Schroeder recorded two singles and had one RBI.
GHV 11, Lake Mills 1
It was a big win on the road when the Cardinals traveled to Lake Mills on Friday, June 24. They captured an 11-1 victory.
The tone of the game was set early, as GHV collected six runs in the first three innings. The Cardinals built on their lead with four runs in the fourth. Alek Goll singled, plating Payton James to start the inning. That was followed by a Cade Baker double that scored Nick Joynt.
James kept hits to a minimum, as he struck out six Bulldog batters. He allowed no earned runs and gave up three hits and walked two in six innings on the mound.
Baker led the team at the plate with four RBIs on three hits, one being a homer. Harley Forry had two hits and brought in two runners. Cade Bamrick hit a double that brought in two runners.
Riley Kozisek and Baker both scored three runs for the Cards.
GHV 10, Eagle Grove 0 (5)
A strong six-run second inning paved the way for a 10-0 victory in five innings over Eagle Grove on Monday, June 27.
The Cardinals opened the scoring onslaught with a RBI double by Cade Baker, more runs came in on an error, a field’s choice, an RBI single by Colton Schroeder and a two-run double by Payton James.
GHV tacked on another three runs in the fifth. Nick Joynt’s single got things rolling, plating Conner Shaw and James.
The Eagles had a tough night against GHV pitcher Ryan Meyers. Meyers gave up just two hits, walked one and struck out five during his four innings of work. Riley Kozisek pitched one inning.
Baker led the offense with two doubles and a single. He also recorded two RBIs. James knocked a double and a single and brought in two runners.
