Airplane makes emergency landing at MC Airport

An American Airlines flight made an emergency landing at the Mason City Municipal Airport around 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 5.

The Clear Lake and Ventura Fire Departments were among those who responded on the report of smoke in the cockpit of an American Eagle jet. The Embraer ERJ-145 twin-jet had taken off from the Joe Foss Field Airport in Sioux Falls, S.D., at 12:30 p.m. and was en route to the Chicago O’Hare International Airport, according to a flight tracking website.

The aircraft had 45 passengers and three crew members onboard. The aircraft landed safely and evacuated passengers on the runway.  No injuries were reported and no smoke or fire were found.  Passengers were bussed to the airport terminal, and were to be picked up by a replacement aircraft later Tuesday.
