Cards take top honors in TIC-West Conference
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura baseball team ended their regular season with two losses. The team heads into Class 2A District 3 competition with an overall record of 18-11. The Cardinals won the Top of Iowa - West Conference with a 13-3 record. GHV had a bye in the first round of District action. They played Emmetsburg (15-14) on Tuesday, July 12, at Clear Lake. Emmetsburg defeated Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, on Saturday, July 9, 13-0, in five innings to advance. Results of the GHV game were not available at press time. Depending on the results of Tuesday games, the Cardinals will face either Clear Lake or Eagle Grove on Saturday, July 16, in Clear Lake. Game time is 7 p.m.
Central Springs 9, GHV 3
A disastrous first inning sealed GHV’s fate in a 9-3 loss to Central Springs on Tuesday, July 5.
Central Springs scored seven runs on an error, a fielder’s choice and two singles to take an early lead.
The Cardinals managed to plate one run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Cade Bamrick. Cade Baker knocked a two-run double for a small Cardinal rally, 9-3, but that’s where it ended for GHV.
Colton Schroeder was charged with the loss. He allowed seven runs in one-third of an inning. He walked three and had no strike-outs. Ryley Kozisek provided some relief on the mound. He allowed two runs, gave up four hits, walked six and struck our three.
Baker was the offensive standout for the Cardinals. He doubled in the fifth and seventh innings and brought in two runners. Bamrick also recorded a double.
Kozisek, Nick Joynt and Anthony Sherwood scored GHV’s three runs.
E-LC 4, GHV 1
GHV pitcher Ryan Meyers did all he could to push the Cardinals to a win Wednesday night, July 6, but GHV came up short in a 4-1 seven inning loss to Estherville-Lincoln Central.
Meyers kept Lincoln Central at bay, with just one hit and no runs, while striking out three batters in his two innings of work. Payton James took the loss for the Cardinals. He lasted four innings, walked none, struck out two and allowed four runs.
E-LC’s pitcher got it done, allowing one run on four hits and he struck out 10 batters.
The Cardinals’ lone run of the ball game came in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Alek Goll.
The only other GHV batters to get a hit were Joynt, Meyers and James.
