Car strikes cyclist, drags rider 150-feet

A Clear Lake man was rushed to the hospital after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle and drug more than 150-feet before the vehicle came to a stop.

On Tuesday, Sept. 27, at around 2:18 p.m. Clear Lake Police and Fire Departments responded to the 2100 block of Main Avenue for a car vs. bike crash. The driver of the car, Nicholas Horst, 36, from Mason City, struck Gary Beach, 47, who was riding a bicycle.

Horst was driving a 2016 Hyundai Veloster westbound on Main Avenue just past South 22nd Street, according to the preliminary crash report.

  The CLFD transported Beach to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa with serious injuries.

Horst was transported to the police station for follow up.  No charges have been filed at this time and the incident remains open, according to Police Chief Pete Roth.

The Iowa State Patrol is assisting in the investigation.
