C-G and Forest City shut down Lions

Clarion-Goldfield won a battle of North Central Conference volleyball teams Tuesday night in Clear Lake.  The Cowgirls (14-13, 3-2) roped the Lions, 3-0.  The Lions (7-12, 1-4) never seemed to get on track in the match, falling 25-13, 25-11, 25-12.

The Lions found themselves on defense for the majority of the match, as C-G dominated at the net.  Clarion’s Ana Johnson had 10 kills and Lili Swanson put down seven.

Emily Snelling, Kiersten Baalson and Jessica Faber had two kills apiece for the Lions.  Carson Frahm was credited with four assists, while Julia Merfeld had two.

Chloe Mueller paced the defense with nine digs.  Snelling had seven and Faber bumped six.

The Lions also struggled from the service line, putting in 83 percent during the match.  Faber and Kayla Ritter were each 5/5 serving and Maranda Harrison was 3/3.  Snelling put in seven of eight serve attempts and Baalson was 4/5.  Ritter and Snelling each had an ace.

Forest City 3, CL 0

Class 3A power Forest City (17-2) held off a determined Clear Lake team Thursday, Sept. 29.  The Indians, ranked number 15, won in straight sets, 25-17, 25-12, 25-23.

The Lions improved their offensive output in their second match of the week.  The team had 13 kills, led by Emily Snelling with five.  Emilie Jandebeuer recorded three, Kiersten Baalson and Jessica Faber each put down two and Carson Frahm had one.  Frahm set up the offense with 11 assists.

Faber and Chloe Mueller each had 10 digs against the Indians, while Frahm and Snelling made two apiece.

At the service line, Faber, Frahm and Mueller all went 5/5.  Snelling was 10/11.

This week the Lions will host North Central Conference foe Webster City on Thursday, Oct. 6. On Saturday they will play in a tournament at Mason City.
