It’s “go” time and the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team is hitting their stride as they near post-season play. The Cardinals picked up two big wins last week.
GHV 3, North Union 0
GHV (5-3) shut down North Union (5-3) on Tuesday, Oct. 4, to claim third place in the Top of Iowa West Conference with scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-18. Lake Mills remains unbeaten at the top of the conference with an 8-0 record. Forest City is second with a 7-1 mark.
“The girls knew they had to come out with energy, push points and serve aggressively against North Union because their conference placement depended on this match,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “The girls played their best match of the season.”
Hannah Lau and Mackenzie Van Gerpen were forces at the net, with Lau recording 16 kills and Van Gerpen 10. Van Gerpen also recorded two blocks. Carlie Knutson and Jacki Van Oort each had four kills and Taylor Gerdes recorded three.
Bailee Frayne led the team in assists with 29.
Knutson led the defense with nine digs, followed closely by Frayne and Van Gerpen with eight digs apiece. Van Oort had seven digs.
Frayne and Knutson were hot from the service line with three ace serves apiece. Van Gerpen had two.

It was another shutout for the Cardinals when they hosted Rockford (1-7) on Thursday, Oct. 6.
GHV came out ready to play and easily captured the first two games, 25-18 and 26-16. Rockford picked it up in the third game and gave the Cards a run for their money before GHV closed the deal with a 25-22 victory.
Hannah Lau led the team with 13 kills, three blocks, four digs and one ace serve.
Mackenzie Van Gerpen also had a good match with seven kills, 10 digs and three ace serves.
Carlie Knutson led the defense with 13 digs to go with her one kill and one ace serve.
