GHV captures tournament crown
The week was looking dismal for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team, as they dropped two matches earlier in the week, but the Cards came back with a vengeance on Saturday and claimed championship honors at their own tournament.
Clarion-Goldfield 3, GHV 0
It was a tough night for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura (13-8) volleyball team when they traveled to Clarion-Goldfield (16-15) on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
The Cardinals were shut out with scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-14.
Carlie Knutson had a stellar game for GHV, with 14 digs, five kills and two ace serves. Mackenzie Van Gerpen also had a good night with 11 digs, six kills and two ace serves.
Hannah Lau led the team in kills with eight. Lydia Seelhammer contributed two kills.
Jackie Van Oort had seven digs, while Fede Monteleone and and Lau had five digs apiece.
Hampton-Dumont 3, GHV 2
It was a back and forth battle on Thursday, Oct. 27, when the Cardinals took on Hampton-Dumont.
GHV opened strong in the first game and picked up a 25-17 win. The Bulldogs took the next game, 25-20. Once again the Cards rose to the occasion in the third game with a 25-19 victory. Hampton-Dumont rolled in the next two games, 25-20, 15-10.
Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Hannah Lau had phenomenal nights for the Cardinals. Both girls recorded 20 kills apiece and each had two ace serves. Van Gerpen led the team with 19 digs, while Lau had 10. Lau also recorded two blocked shots.
Carlie Knutson also had a strong night, with 12 kills, 16 digs and one ace serve.
Collecting 10 digs apiece was Fede Monteleone, Jacki Van Oort and Bailee Frayne.
Frayne led the team in assists with a whooping 45.
GHV Tournament
It was a big day for the Cardinals when they hosted a tournament on Saturday, Oct. 15. GHV went 4-1 and took home the championship. A highlight of the day was topping West Fork in the championship game after being beaten by them in pool play earlier in the day.

The Cards went 2-1 in pool play, beating Central Springs and Newman, but falling to West Fork. Against number 13 Central Springs, the Cards won the first game, 21-17, the Panthers took the second, 21-14 and GHV won the final game, 17-15. The Cardinals beat Newman in two games, 21-18, 21-15. West Fork pulled off two close games, 21-18 and 21-19.
GHV advanced to the semi-finals, where they faced Northwood-Kennett. The Cardinals picked up a big win in the first game, 21-10. The second game was a battle, but the Cards prevailed, 22-20.
The final match against West Fork looked doubtful for the Cardinals in the first game, as the Warhawks won easily, 21-10. GHV showed determination and battled back in the next two games to claim the championship, 21-12 and 15-9.
“In the finals, we were able to make the needed adjustments and run a strong offense,” said Steffens.
Hannah Lau and Mackenzie Van Gerpen led the team at the net with 43 and 38 kills respectively. Lau also had 11 blocks. Van Gerpen led the team in digs with 40, followed by Carlie Knutson with 28 and Jacki Van Oort with 19. Bailee Frayne led the team in assists with 79.
