GHV volleyball team stays focused and advances in Regional play

A focused and aggressive Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team shut down Hampton-Dumont, 3-0 in the opening round in the Class 3A Region 4 volleyball tournament held on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

“Out main focus tonight was on energy,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.  “The girls know how to fight and push points.  The combination of determination and energy helped them be successful on the court.”

The Cards came out strong in the first game, capturing a 25-19 victory.

GHV had to concentrate and fight hard in the second set.  Trailing most of the game, they battled to a close 27-25 victory.  The Bulldogs fell apart in the third game and the Cardinals rolled to an easy 25-13 win and a chance to continue in the tournament.

GHV faced Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (17-15) on Tuesday, Oct. 25.  Game results will appear in next week’s edition of the Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter.  Clarion-Goldfield-Dows upset Forest City (24-6) in the opening game of the tournament.

Hannah Lau was on a roll against H-D with a team high 22 kills.  She also had six blocked shots, two ace serves and seven digs.

Carlie Knutson led the team on defense with 18 digs.  She also recorded two kills and one blocked shot.

Mackenzie Van Gerpen also had a good night, with 14 kills and 13 digs to go with her ace serve and one block.

Bailee Frayne led the team in assists with 33.  She also had four digs, one kill and one ace serve.

Taylor Gerdes contributed five kills and three blocked shots.  Jacki Van Oort and Fede Monteleone had eight and seven digs respectively.
