Seven Lions earn All-District honors
Seven members of the Clear Lake Lions have been named to the Class 2A, District 2 All-District teams.
Zach Lester, a junior, has been named to the First Team offense as a receiver. Within the District, Lester made 27 catches for 464-yards, averaging 17.2-yards per reception. His longest reception was 74-yards and he scored six touchdowns via the pass. Lester was also a First Team choice for the First Team defense as punter. He averaged just over 40-yards per punt on 22 kicks, with his longest boot being 73-yards.
Four additional Lions join Lester on the First Team All-District defense.
Senior Ryan Atkinson and junior Joey Monson were named to the outside linebacker/defensive end contingent. Atkinson made 20 solo tackles in District play, eight of them for a loss. He also recorded three solo sacks. Monson made 30 solo tackles against District opponents, with seven for a loss. He made 12 tackle assists for a team-high 42 tackles. He was also credited with five solo sacks.
Seniors Cody Matz and Thomas Storbeck were named to the First Team as Utility players. On defense Matz made 31 solo tackles and 13.5 assisted tackles for 44.5. He also made three solo tackles for a loss. Matz also helped the Lions by making 10 receptions for 183-yards. His longest catch was 44-yards and he scored two touchdowns. Storbeck served as the Lions’ quarterback until he was sidelined with an injury late in the season. The senior completed 80 of 148 pass attempts for 1,041 -yards, a 54.1 percent completion rate. His longest pass went for 74-yards. He threw for 13 touchdowns and was picked off seven times. Storbeck carried the ball 50 times for 252-yards, an average of five-yards per tote. He scored two rushing touchdowns. On defense, Storbeck made nine solo tackles and 3.5 assists. He recovered two fumbles.
Lions Drew Enke and Kyle Willms were named to the District 2 Honorable Mention list. Enke, a sophomore, made 23 receptions in District games for 272-yards, an average of 11.8-yards each reception. His longest reception went for 54-yards. He scored three touchdowns. Willms, a senior, recorded six solo and 4.5 assisted tackles for a total of 10.5. He also made one solo tackle for a loss. On special teams, Willms returned nine kickoffs for 409-yards.
Ten Lions who maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher were also named to the Class 2A District 2 All-Academic Team. Qualifying students included: seniors Kyle Calaguas, Nick Eggers, Cody Matz, Jacob Peterson, Thomas Storbeck and Kyle Willms; juniors Luke Eggers, Zach Lester and Max McKenna; and sophomore Drew Enke.
