Clear Lake man asks judge to review sentence
A Clear Lake man convicted of going on a crime spree in 2014 was back in court Monday, Dec. 12, arguing that his sentencing was illegal.
Michael Dean Wilson was arrested on Oct. 29, 2014 and charged with burglarizing the Econo Foods Pharmacy, breaking into ATM machines at Lakeside Pit-Stop and Rumorz Bar in Clear Lake, and stealing a truck from the area of Buddy Holly Place and Highway 18. Wilson was located in the truck in a corn field, but when officers tried to apprehend him, he drove out of the corn field. Later the truck was found in the ditch at 240th Street and Hickory Avenue in Clear Lake. The cab of the truck was fully engulfed in flames, but Wilson was not in the truck. He was apprehended by Clear Lake police the next day and taken to Cerro Gordo County Jail.
In February 2015, Wilson pleaded guilty to arson, two counts of burglary, possession of meth, and criminal mischief as a habitual offender. He was sentenced to 55 years in prison. The length of his sentence was increased because of his criminal record prior to his 2015 convictions. Wilson was disputing the definition of a habitual offender in court Monday. He argued only one of his charges should be considered a habitat offense and asked the judge to change his sentencing.
A ruling will be issued at a later date.
