The eighth ranked (3A) Clear Lake girls pushed their record to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the North Central Conference with a lopsided win over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows on Tuesday, Dec. 13. The Lions won, 66-22.
The Lions dominated every facet of the game and caused the Cowgirls to commit numerous turnovers which resulted in Clear Lake baskets.
“I was pleased with how we set the tempo for the game with our press. We did a nice job offensively versus their 2-3 zone. We took care of the ball a lot better this time and the girls worked the zone to get a good shot,” said Coach Bart Smith. “I was very happy with their offensive rebounding to allow us to get second chance shots, that needs to continue.”
Senior Emily Snelling led the way with 27 points and six of the teams’ 20 steals. She also dished out a team-high nine assists. Jordyn Barragy was the other Lion to finish in double figures with 13 points and three rebounds.
Sara Faber had a good all-around game with nine points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Julia Merfeld scored six points and Jessica Faber had five points and a team-leading six rebounds.
Kiersten Baalson put in three points, Chloe Mueller two, and Gretchen Jones one point to round out the scoring for the Lions. Mickayla Vanderploeg did not score, but contributed with her strength on the boards. The sophomore pulled down five rebounds.
The Lions were effective from three point range, sinking 16 of 28 attempts from beyond the arc.
Free throw shooting was also a strength, as they sunk 16 or 19 attempts.
