Revenge is sweet for CL grapplers
The Clear Lake wrestling team picked up two big North Central Conference wins Thursday. The Lions avenged a loss to Webster City, then rolled over St. Ed’s in a triangular held on the Lions’ home mat. The Lions also got revenge against a good Humboldt team at Saturday’s Osage Tournament.
“Overall, we are seeing the improvement needed as we close in on the NCC tournament this weekend and ultimately the sectional tournament in February,” said Coach Mike Lester.

Earlier this season Webster City topped the Lions, 36-31. But Thursday night, fueled by a huge home crowd, the Lions posted a 45-24 victory.
Rhys Glidden started the night off with an impressive pin at 160-pounds to get the Lions rolling in the right direction. Webster City moved its lineup up and put Clear Lake’s Chance Poley in a position where he battled back from a deficit to get another impressive pin at 170. Dalton Mennenga avenged a loss at 195 with a commanding 5-0 win and Kyle Willms battled back from a deficit to get another pin for Clear Lake at 220.
To secure the chance for a victory Clear Lake Head Coach Mike Lester moved the lineup, which gave a forfeit at 113 to Connor Morey and moved the Lions usual 113-pounder, Eric Faught, into a match with Drake Doolittle, ranked second at 120.
“Eric was a huge team player making this move. It also avoided him getting two forfeits for the night. These high caliber matches are great for an athlete going for a state title,” noted Coach Lester.
Faught dropped his first match of the season, 8-4.
Jackson Hamlin picked up a 6-1 decision at 126, and Braxton Doebel was able to avenge a loss. He topped Carson Hartnett with an 8-5 decision at 132. Ryan Leisure and Ben Finn sealed the dual and wrapped up the win with two more pins at 145 and 152.
Against St. Ed’s falls were recorded by Finn (152) and Hamlin (120). The Gaels forfeited at 11 weights.
“The crowd was amazing and fueled the excitement and drive that our wrestlers showed that night. We have a great community to wrestle for,” added Coach Lester.
Osage Duals
The Lions went 3-2 against a number of quality opponents at Saturday’s Osage Duals. The team picked up big wins against Independence and Osage, as well as avenge another loss— this time against Humboldt.
Clear Lake wrestled a close match against Dike-New Hartford, but fell 34-28. Top rated Ryan Leisure helped his team and moved up to wrestle second rated Trent Johnson at 152. Leisure sustained a chest injury in the match, but ended up winning 9-4. Jackson Hamlin continues to wrestle well and won by fall at 120. Eric Faught won the first of his five matches on the day. He was a 12-11 winner at 113, and Dalton Mennenga won by major decision, 9-1, at 195.
Against Humboldt, Mennenga had another big win. He earned a 5-2 decision in sudden victory to spark the Lions in the first match. Kyle Willms followed with a fall at 220 in 3:47. In the lower weights, Faught recorded a fall in :37 at 113. Rhys Gladden picked up a win at 160 by technical fall. Chance Poley and Kade Hambly closed out the match with falls.
The Lions got their second win of the day against Independence, 48-28. Hambly, Willms, Hamlin, Doebel, Leisure and Finn were winners by fall.
Clear Lake also dropped host Osage by a score of 42-32. Faught won by fall, as did Bryan Hillyer, Doebel and Mennenga. Hamlin was an 8-2 winner at 120 and Aaron Canchola earned a 4-3 decision at 138.
Kasson-Mantorville, top ranked in Minnesota, dominated Clear Lake and the rest of the field Saturday. They were 70-3 winners over the Lions. The lone win for Clear Lake was earned by Faught, who posted a 6-3 decision.
