Second round of sidewalk bids yields results for City
Timing was everything for the Clear Lake City Council. In 2016, bids to replace brick sidewalks on Main Avenue were 32 percent above the engineer’s estimate for the work. The Council rejected the lone bid and opted to try again.
On their second try, the Council accepted a bid just under 4 percent lower than the engineer’s estimate, clearing the way for work to begin this spring replacing the uneven walkways.
At the Jan. 16 City Council meeting, Tim Moreau, of Veenstra & Kimm, stated that the bid letting was held on Jan. 12 with a total of three bids received from general contractors. The lowest bid proposal was submitted by Larson Contracting, of Lake Mills, Iowa in the amount of $619,291, which was 3.9 percent under the engineer’s estimate of probable cost of construction of $643,401.
The Council unanimously accepted the low bid.
In other business at the meeting, the Council held a public hearing and reviewed five bids for the 14th Avenue North Street Reconstruction Improvement Project.
Andy Smith, from WHKS, reviewed the bid letting and stated that Wick’s Construction, of Decorah, Iowa was the lowest responsive, responsible bidder with a bid of $281,156. The engineer’s estimate of the probable cost of construction was $312,000.
The bid was accepted and construction is slated to begin in the spring and be completed prior to June 23, 2017.

This year there will be around nine Buddy’s Buddies musicians from seven states and two from England. USA members are Chris Cekosh, Billy Corston, Butch Dobos, Dennis Farland, Brian Mahoney, Jim Schuman, Lan Wellman, Mark Wildhagen and Andy Yaun. From England will come Tony Marsh and Dave Parsons. That list will grow, says King, it always does. In addition there will be guest stars, The Baldy Holly Band from England, a four piece unit, making their debut here in the USA.
Also appearing at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura will be the School’s very talented vocal jazz choir ‘Impulse’.
You can catch ‘Buddy’s Buddies’ with The Baldy Holly Band at the Winter School Dance Party at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Elementary School Gymnasium on Wednesday Feb. 1, from 12:30 – 2 p.m., then at E.B. Stillman Auditorium, Clear Lake Middle School, on Thursday Feb. 2, from 1-3 p.m.
Admission for kids is free; cost is $5 for adults, which goes to help provide the Winter Dance Party Musical Scholarships.
“That’s not bad value for getting to see around 15 very talented musicians and nearly 1,000 kids having a lot of fun,” adds King.
