CBS Sunday Morning will air segment on Midwest kite festival
Clear Lake’s popular Color The Wind Kite Festival will be the subject of a CBS Sunday Morning segment.
Larry and Kay Day, organizers of the annual event, confirmed Monday that a CBS crew will fly into North Iowa from New York to film the Saturday, Feb. 18, event.
Serious kite fliers from at least eight states will travel to Clear Lake to brighten the skies above the frozen lake with colorful kites of all shapes and sizes.
“There will be kites flown during the event on Feb. 18 that have never been seen here before,” said Larry Day. One that will warrant a lot of attention is a space alien seen sitting atop his spaceship. Crowd favorites that will be back are the galloping horses, “Whiskers” the cat, the big 60-foot long whales, Day’s trademark kite, “Buddy” the 40-foot Teddy Bear plus many more.”
Stunt kite shows, as well as the opportunity for novice flyers to give kite flying a try, are also part of the fun from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 18.
“Dress warmly, come early, stay late,” say the Days. “Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and join others to ‘camp out’ and picnic on the frozen lake so you don’t miss anything.”
Those unable to attend will want to watch for announcements about when the piece might air on CBS Sunday Morning.
