A win and a loss for GHV girls soccer team

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls soccer team had some adversity to overcome when they hosted Aplington-Parkersburg on Thursday, May 4. They had several girls out sick, and the starting goalie out with a concussion. Aplington-Parkersburg took advantage of a weaker Cardinal team and posted a 5-1 victory.
“Our efforts were good, except for maybe 25 minutes of the game and that’s when the goals were scored against us,” said Coach Josh Banse. “If we can figure out how to put a complete game together and get healthy I think that score would be a lot different.”
Jacki Van Oort scored the Cardinals’ lone goal of the game.
Goalie Katie Oetken had 14 saves.
“Katie did well stepping in for Morgan Westendorf at the goalie position,” said Banse.

The Cardinals put together their best game of the season when they faced CAL/Hampton-Dumont/Belmond-Klemme on Friday, May 5, at CAL. GHV showed no mercy, winning the game, 10-0.
“I was really pleased with the effort, the teamwork and the communication. Our defense played really well, not allowing a shot on goal,” said Coach Josh Banse.
Jacki Van Oort and Mackenzie Van Gerpen led the Cardinals with three goals apiece. Payton Echelberger also had a good game with two goals. Hannah Lau and

Trinity Smith had one goal each.
Van Green and Lau had one assist apiece.
“If we can attack the goal like this next week and our defense plays as well as they did, we should be able to have a good week against Clear Lake and Denver,” said Banse.
