Solid week of baseball for GHV Cardinals

It was a solid week of baseball for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura baseball team, as they picked up three wins.

GHV 15, Belmond-Klemme 0

Ryley Kozisek didn’t allow a single hit as GHV destroyed Belmond-Klemme on Tuesday, May 30.  Kozisek struck out 10 batters in the lopsided victory to earn the win.

The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead, racking up three runs in the first inning and adding four more in the second inning for a 7-0 lead.

GHV scored three more runs in the fourth inning.  A highlight was a home run by Anthony Sherwood.

The fifth inning was pure adrenaline for the Cardinals, as they knocked in five more runs.  Nick Joynt smacked a home run, while Sherwood and Logan Dalbeck each connected on a double and Kozisek scored on a fielder’s choice.

The Cardinals had a total of 12 hits in the game.  Dane Whipple, Dalbeck and Sherwood each collected multiple hits for GHV.  Sherwood, Joynt and Dalbeck had three RBIs apiece to lead the Cardinals.

The Cardinal fielding was also stellar for the night, with zero errors.  Joynt made the most plays with 10.

GHV 5, Bishop Garrigan 2

It wasn’t until the fourth inning that GHV flexed its muscles to put Bishop Garrigan away in a 5-2 victory on Wednesday, May 31, at home.

The Cardinals scored first in the bottom of the third inning.  The Golden Bears scored one run in the fourth and fifth inning to go up, 2-1.  GHV’s bats got swinging in the sixth inning, as they tallied up four runs to seal the 5-2 victory.

Ryan Meyers earned the win for GHV.  He threw seven innnings, gave up two runs, five hits and struck out nine batters.

Connor Burke was two-for-two at the plate with one RBI.  Logan Dalbeck had one hit and two RBIs.  Also collecting one hit apiece was Cade Bamrick, Brady Hess, Nick Joynt and Anthony Sherwood.

Hess and Joynt also had one RBI apiece.

Rockford 8, GHV 0

The Cardinals couldn’t recover from a disastrous first inning, and fell to Rockford, 8-0, on Thursday, June 1.

Rockford scored seven runs in the first inning and the Cardinals just couldn’t manage to get a runner across home plate, despite out-hitting the Warriors four to three.  Rockford collected one more hit in the bottom of the sixth inning for the final 8-0 victory.

Cade Bamrick took the loss for GHV.  He threw one-third of an inning, giving up five runs.  Noah Boeckman and Sam Childress also took a turn on the mound.  Boeckman gave up one hit and two runs.  Childress pitched five-and-two-thirds innings.  He gave up two hits, one run and struck out seven.

Dalbeck led the team at the plate, going two-for-four.  Brody Boehnke and Justin Reding also connected for a hit.

GHV 3, Lake Mills 2

The GHV team came back from a 2-1 deficit to beat Lake Mills, 3-2, on Friday, June 2, at home.

Nick Joynt singled on a ground ball to bring in Cade Bamrick for the Cardinals’ first score in the first inning.  Lake Mills scored in the first and second inning to take the early 2-1 lead.

The Cardinals didn’t get anything going until the sixth inning.  The excitement began when Dane Whipple smacked a home run to centerfield and brought Joynt in for the final 3-2 victory.

Anthony Sherwood earned the win for GHV.  He pitched five and one-third innings, giving up two runs, five hits and striking out four.  Colton Schroeder had the last five outs for the Cards.

Whipple and Joynt led the team at the plate.  Whipple had one hit and two RBIs, while Joynt had two hits and one RBI.
