Cards rebound to pick up four wins

It was a week of ups and downs for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura baseball team, as they dropped a game early in the week to Newman, but rebounded to pick up four wins, before dropping two games at a tournament on Saturday. The Cardinals moved their record to 14-8.
Newman 12, GHV 0
The Newman Knights blanked the Cardinals on Tuesday, June 20. Newman started strong and ended strong in the 12-0 shut-out.
The Knights had big second and fifth innings, scoring four runs in each inning.
Anthony Sherwood recorded the loss for the Cardinals. He threw four innings, giving up nine runs, 12 hits and striking out two. Sam Childress pitched one inning. He gave up three hits, three runs and struck out one.
The Cardinals had a hard time getting the bats going. Nine batters were struck out by the Newman pitcher. Landon Dalbeck led the team at the plate with two hits. Dane Whipple, Sherwood, Colton Schroeder, Ryan Meyers and Ryley Kozisek all managed one hit apiece.
GHV 2, Bishop-Garrigan 0
Wednesday night’s game shone a bright light on GHV’s pitcher, Colton Schroeder, he did a fine job on the mound, allowing no runs and giving up only five hits, while striking out four, in the 2-0 victory.
The Cards got on the board first. Landon Dalbeck singled on a ground ball to center field that brought Dane Whipple across the plate.
The second run came in the second inning when Cade Bamrick singled on a line drive to left field that brought in Ryley Kozisek. Those two runs is all it took for the Cardinals to win the game.
Kozisek had a solid night at bat, with three hits. Bamrick, Anthony Sherwood and Dalbeck all had one hit apiece.
GHV 9, B-K 8
It was a hard fought game on Thursday, June 19, but the Cardinals never gave up, as they came from behind for the 9-8 victory late in the game.
The Cardinals recorded 12 hits and the Broncos seven in the high-scoring showdown.
B-K got up 6-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning. The Cardinals got it going from there, recording five runs. A single with bases loaded by Ryley Kozisek brought in Colton Schroeder and Ryan Meyers to get the scoring started. Brady Hess doubled on a line drive and brought in Kozisek. Conner Burke scored on a pitcher balk and the final run was scored by Hess on a wild pitch.
The score was knotted, 8-8 heading

into the bottom of the tenth when Anthony Sherwood scored on an error by the third baseman for the winning run.
Meyers earned the win for GHV. He tossed four innings, allowed zero run, zero hits and struck out seven. Kozisek started the game. He allowed six runs, six hits and struck out two.
Hess, Dane Whipple, Burke and Schroeder all had multiple hits for the Cards.
Kozisek had two RBIs, while Hess, Whipple, Schroeder and Burke all had one RBI.
GHV 2, West Hancock 1
It may have been a slow moving game, but the Cardinals prevailed on Thursday, June 22, when they faced West Hancock.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Ryan Meyers hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Anthony Sherwood.
The Eagles also scored a run in the fourth to tie the game, 1-1.
The Cardinals scored in the top of the fifth when Dane Whipple hit a pop fly to right field, allowing Brady Hess to score. That was enough to win the game, 2-1, in seven innings.
Ryley Kozisek pitched the entire game. He gave up three hits, one run and struck out five.
Whipple, Sherwood, Cade Bamrick, and Colton Schroeder all had one hit apiece for the Cardinals.
GHV 3, Lake Mills 1
The game on Friday, June 23, saw some strong pitching efforts from both teams. The Cardinal hurlers only allowed two hits in the 3-1 victory over Lake Mills.
Ryan Meyers earned the win for GHV. He went six innings, giving up one run, one hit and striking out three. Brady Hess recorded the last three outs to earn the save for GHV. The Lake Mills pitcher gave up three runs, five hits and struck out four.
Lake Mills scored one run in the first innings, but the Cardinals shut them down for the rest of the game.
The Cardinals plated all three of their runs in the fourth inning. The first run came when Cade Bamrick singled on a line drive to left field and Justin Reding scored. The second run came off a Hess hit that scored Bamrick. The final run was off a double by Dane Whipple that brought in Hess.
Hess and Whipple each had two hits in the game. Bamrick was the only other player to connect.
Hess led the team in stolen bases with two.
Davenport North 11, GHV 8
Lisbon 12, GHV 4
The Cardinals met some strong competition on Saturday, June 24, at a tournament held at Buck Stadium in Waterloo, Iowa.
The first game was a high scoring showdown against Davenport North. The score was tied 4-4 at the end of the third inning. Davenport North scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, followed by GHV scoring two runs in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 6-6. Davenport North had a huge sixth inning, plating five runs. GHV fought hard in the seventh, scoring two runs, but it wasn’t enough as the Cardinals fell, 11-8.
The Cardinals had 10 hits in the high-scoring affair. Ryan Meyers and Colton Schroeder led the charge at the plate. Meyers had three hits and one RBI, while Schroeder had two hits and three RBIs. Whipple had one hit and two RBIs.
Anthony Sherwood took the loss for GHV. He pitched three innings, giving up seven runs, seven hits and striking out four. Brady Hess started the game. He tossed three innings, surrendering four runs and five hits.
The second game saw the Cardinals fall behind early. GHV never got a rhythm, as they fell 12-4 to Lisbon.
Lisbon opened strong and led 6-0 before the Cardinals scored in the bottom of the fourth when Meyers singled and Sherwood scored. GHV plated two runs in the fifth inning, when Sherwood smacked a double that brought in Justin Reding. That was followed by Landon Dalbeck hitting a hard ground ball that allowed Sherwood to cross the plate, 6-3. The Cardinals scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth when Cade Bamrick brought in Ryley Kozisek on a single.
Lisbon scored three runs in both the sixth inning and the seventh for the final 12-4 victory.
Sam Childress took the loss. He pitched two and one-third innings, surrendering five runs and four hits.
Burke, Schroeder and Meyers had multiple hits in the game.
Burke, Sherwood, Dalbeck and Meyers all had one RBI.
