Clear Lake girls tennis rolling over competition
The Clear Lake girls tennis team squeezed a lot of their season into one week- and they did it very successfully.
CL 8, Osage 1
On Monday, April 23, the Lions were at Osage and dominated in an 8-1 win to improve to 3-0. A highlight of the match was sophomore Julia Merfeld’s first varsity singles win. “She showed promise with her shot placement and hustle and her win sealed the overall match for us,” said Coach Mary Jo Peterson. “Each player had a game plan in mind today and stuck to it. Our doubles also communicated well and made big points at the net.”

The Lions continued to roll on Tuesday, April 24, as they shot down the Charles City Comets, 8-1. Coach Peterson noted her players needed to make adjustments in the windy conditions.

The Lions kept their record perfect with a close 5-4 victory over Mason City Friday, April 27. The Match featured four super-tiebreakers. The Lions only won one of the super-tiebreakers, but it made the difference in the final score.
Clear Lake found itself up, 4-2 after singles play.
Gretchen Jones outpaced Bailey Vandusseldorp, 6-2, 6-1; Chloe Mueller defeated Grace Henrich, 6-3, 6-3; and Maranda Harrison defeated Lauren Andrews, 6-1, 6-2. Mikayla Brant finished off and won a crucial match at number five singles, 4-6, 6-4 and 10-3 in super tie-breaker.
The remaining two singles matches were also close. Irene Swanson dropped her match 3-6, 4-6 to Peyton Carpenter, and Julia Merfeld lost a super tie-breaker 10-2 after fighting her way back from a 3-6 first set and 6-3 second.
The doubles team of Jones and Mueller scored the fifth win for Clear Lake with their solid play and win over Henrich and Andrews, 6-2, 6-3.
Harrison and Merfeld won their first set 6-3, but lost the second 1-6 and eventually lost the super tie-breaker 5-10. The team of Swanson and Bailey Goldberg lost the first set 4-6, but came back to win the second. They also lost their super tie-breaker, 3-10.
