The Garner-Hayfield boys golf team picked up two big victories in action last week and also claimed top honors at the Top of Iowa Conference Meet.

Forest City Meet

The Cardinals overcame very windy and wet conditions to defeat Forest City by 19 strokes and North Union by 29, on Monday, April 30, in Forest City.  GHV won the triangular with a 197, followed by Forest City with 216 and North Union with a 226.

“The boys posted a double victory on the most difficult nine holes in North Iowa,” said Coach Ken Krause.

Matthew Heinemann doubled the first hole, but then settled in to shoot a solid six-over-par 43 to lead the team.  Tyler Obermann had and excellent round until doubling the last two holes.  His 45 tied for third place in the meet.

GHV Meet

The Cardinals finally got a home meet in on the last day of the regular season.  After heavy rains on Thursday, the course was very wet, but playable on Friday, May 4.  GHV won the meet with a 169, followed by Forest City with a 186 and Newman-Catholic carded a 196.

Matthew Heinemann again led the Cardinals with a 39.  His score tied for meet medalist honors with Newman-Catholic’s Austin Eckenrod.  Both young men will be playing for NIACC next season.

“Tyler Obermann has been one of the most consistent players this season,” said Coach Ken Krause.  “His work has really paid off during his high school career.”

Obermann shot a 42.  Caden Vitek was only one stroke behind Obermann with a 43.  Krause said he is expecting Vitek to be a big key to tournament success.  Sam Umbarger was nine over on his first four holes, then played the last five holes even par.  Tyler Kumsher was five over on two holes, but played the other seven holes four over.

“It has been a short season for all area golfers, but we have done quite well,” said Krause.

The Cards enter tournament play with a 13-2 record.

TIC Meet

It was an exciting day for the GHV boys, as they captured the top honor at the Top of Iowa Conference Meet with a score of 324.  Nine teams competed in the meet.  Bishop Garrigan was second with a 332 and Forest City was third with a 344.

Senior Matthew Heinemann was named the runner-up medalist.  Heinemann carded a 72, only three strokes behind meet medalist Andrew Arndorfer, of Bishop Garrigan.

GHV had two other golfers break into the top 10.  Cayden Vitek was fifth with a score of 81, and Tyler Kumsher was 10th with his score of 84.

Rounding out the Cardinal scorecard was Tyler Obermann, who carded an 87, good for 12th place.

“This was a great day of golf,” said Coach Ken Krause.
