Three wins and one loss for GHV boys soccer team
It was a busy week for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys soccer team, as they played four games in five days. The team picked up three wins and dropped one.
GHV 1, Webster City 0
On Monday, May 7, the team traveled to Webster City, where they defeated the Lynx, 1-0.
“We played more like a team against Webster City, who is a very good team,” said Coach Eric Williams
The Cardinal defense stepped it up and held Webster City scoreless by making them take most of their shots from a distance. Dane Whipple had an assist to Colton Schroeder, who scored the Cardinal goal.
Connor Burke had three shots on goal, while Jonah Albertson and Schroeder had two, and Jared Graham had one shot on goal.
Burke took four shots, while Whipple had one.
Landon Dalbeck had 80 minutes in goal, were he had eight saves.
GHV 2, Hudson 1
It was an exciting day for the Cardinals on Thursday, May 10, when the team pulled off a 2-1 victory over Hudson, who is ranked in Class 2A.
GHV played aggressive and in control for most of the first half and traded shots with Hudson. The second half was a little different, with the Cardinals picking up the defense and making Hudson shoot from outside the 18, allowing the defense to protect the goal and keep Hudson from scoring.
“I knew we were a good team and we just needed to prove ourselves,” said Coach Eric Williams. “We did just enough to get the victory against a great team.”
Ryan Meyers and Colton Schroeder scored the goals for the Cardinals. Connor Burke supplied an assist.
Landon Dalbeck had eight saves.
GHV 8, Humboldt 4
It was quite a match on Friday, May 11, when the Cardinals traveled to Humboldt. GHV pulled off a high scoring, 8-4 win, but not without some scratches.
The Cardinals came ready to play and started the game aggressively and put in some shots to take a lead.
“We hustled to the ball, had passing that was on line, and stayed in good position,” said Coach Eric Williams. “We played really well even through there were some unfortunate circumstances in the second half.”
Some Humboldt players became frustrated and took it out on some GHV players.
“Our young men held their composure and resolve and didn’t retaliate. As a coach, you want to instruct and encourage that when a citation like that arises you will be the bigger person and walk away,” said Williams.
After the dust settled, the Cardinals continued to play well and had the opportunity to let some underclassmen and reserves see some action.
Ryan Meyers had a great game for the Cardinals, scoring three goals. Connor Burke scored two goals, while Dane Whipple, Colton Schroeder and Jared Graham each had one goal.
Whipple, Graham and Seth Miller all had two assists apiece.
In the goalie position, Landon Dalbeck had two saves and one goal scored against him. Matthew Barickman had six saves and three goals scored against him. Brady Hess also saw some time in the goalie position where he had one save.
