GHV wrestlers kick off season with a home quadrangular

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura wrestling team hosted a quadrangular on Thursday Dec. 29, with Nashua Plainfield, Lake Mills, and Newman-Catholic. The Cardinals wrestled hard, but lost all three duals.
N-P 55, GHV 22
John Grady got things going for the Cardinals in the opening match against Nashua-Plainfield. Grady, who wrestles at 138 pounds, recorded a pin in 4:32. Luke Brown lost by a 12-2 major decision at 145, making the score 6-4.
GHV went on a run, winning the next two matches. Jared Shaw, at 152, recorded a 19-9 major decision and Adam Heflin picked up a pin in 2:21 at 160 pounds. The Cards took a comfortable 16-4 lead.
The next four matches did not go in GHV’s favor. Buck Weaver was pinned in 1:42 at 170 pounds, followed by Nick Billings getting pinned in 2:54 at 182 pounds. The Cardinals forfeited the next two weights, giving N-P a 28-16 lead.
Cole Dakin lost 3-2 at 285 pounds.
Zach Feld got GHV back on the board with a fall in :35 at 106 pounds.
Nashua-Plainfield received forfeits at 113 and 126-pounds. Drew Furst and Brandon Galkin, wrestling at 120 and 132-pounds, were both pinned for the final, 55-22.
Lake Mills 73, GHV 6
The Cardinals only managed one win against a very tough Lake Mills team.
Jared Shaw picked up the lone win at 152 pounds. Shaw pinned his opponent in 2:39 to record GHV’s only points against the Bulldogs.
The Cardinals forfeited four matches. Eight of the matches were lost by a fall. Nick Billings lost by a 7-5 decision.
Newman 42, GHV 37
It was a tight battle between the Cardinals and the Knights, but it was Newman that prevailed in the dual, 42-37.
The meet started at 152 pounds, where GHV’s Jared Shaw recorded a 5-2 decision. Adam Heflin followed that with a pin at 160 pounds to give the Cards a 9-0 lead.
Buck Weaver was pinned at 170 pounds, allowing Newman on the board. That was followed by a Newman Catholic forfeit and two forfeits by GHV, 18-15.
Cole Dakin recorded a pin in 2:00 at 285 pounds to once again give the Cards the advantage, 21-18.
The next four weights saw both teams forfeit two matches apiece, allowing GHV to maintain their three-point advantage, 33-30.
Brandon Galkin was pinned in 1:22 at 132 pounds, followed by John Grady getting pinned at 138-pounds in 2:40. The Knights moved into the lead, 42-33.
Luke Brown picked up the last of the Cardinal points with a 9-0 major decision at 145-pounds.
