Nielsen to compete for GHV

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura wrestling team had one wrestler that made it through the Class 2A Sectional wrestling tournament held in Osage on Saturday, Feb. 2.  Tyler Nielsen will represent the Cardinals at the District Meet this weekend in Clear Lake.

Nielsen, who wrestles heavy weight, received a bye in the first round.  In the Semifinals, he pinned Chase Crooks, of Charles City in 1:47.  In the first place match, Emilio Valenzuela, of Hampton-Dumont, won by a 6-1 decision.  Nielsen won by Rule over Crooks in the second place match.  Nielsen has a record of 24-11.

Luke Brown, at 138 pounds, and Rafe Van Dusseldorp, at 220 pounds, both placed third.

Brown received a bye in the quarterfinal.  He lost to Bryan Hillyer, from Clear Lake, in the semifinal by a 3-2 decision.  In the third place match he pinned Brett Walton, of Forest City, in 1:22.  He lost in the second place match to Osage’s Brody Roll by a 5-2 decision.

Van Dusseldorp pinned Jace Cajithaml, from Charles City, in 2:20 in the quarterfinal.  Kade Hambly, of Clear Lake, pinned Van Dusseldorp in :47 in the semifinal.  Van Dusseldorp came back in the third place match to pin Jett Nehls, of Osage, in 3:03.  He lost to Wyatt Folkerts, from Hampton-Dumont, by a fall in 3:30 in the second place match.

Brown ended his season with a 21-26 record, while Van Dusseldorp ended with a record of 4-4.

Jared Shaw, who wrestles at 152 pounds, has been a strong competitor for the Cardinals all season, placed fourth at the Sectional Tournament.  He ended with a record of 21-6.

•106 - Zach Feld (17-23) placed 5th and scored 8.0 team points. Quarterfinal - Jacob Vais (Charles City) 17-21 won by fall over Feld 17-23 (Fall 0:58). Cons. Semi - Feld received a bye. Fifth Place Match - Feld won by fall over Gavin Rich (Clear Lake) 2-19 (Fall 0:14)

•120 - Drew Furst (20-26) placed 4th and scored 11.0 team points. Quarterfinal - Furst won by fall over Wyatt Gelhaus (Forest City) 23-21 (Fall 1:36).  Semifinal - Joe Sullivan (Osage) 43-5 won by fall over Furst (Fall 1:24). Third Place Match - Conner Morey (Clear Lake) 19-14 won by fall over Furst (Fall 3:48).

•126 - Brandon Galkin (7-19) placed 6th and scored 4.0 team points.  Quarterfinal - Kaleb Umbaugh (Forest City) 34-18 won by fall over Galkin (Fall 3:13).  Cons. Semi -  Galkin received a bye. Fifth Place Match - Isaiah Smith (Clear Lake) 8-26 won by fall over Galkin (Fall 1:25).

•138 - Luke Brown (21-26) placed 3rd and scored 14.0 team points. Quarterfinal - Luke Brown received a bye. Semifinal - Bryan Hillyer (Clear Lake) 23-12 won by decision over Brown (Dec 3-2).  Third Place Match - Brown won by fall over Brett Walton (Forest City) 13-14 (Fall 1:22).  Second Place Match - Brody Roll (Osage) 36-17 won by decision over Brown (Dec 5-2).

•152 - Jared Shaw (21-6) placed 4th and scored 11.0 team points. Quarterfinal - Shaw won by fall over Blake Skjeie (Forest City) 10-33 (Fall 1:50). Semifinal - Carter Proffitt (Charles City) 28-9 won by decision over Shaw (Dec 9-8).  Third Place Match - Colin Muller (Osage) 33-19 won by decision over Shaw (Dec 8-5).

•160 - Adam Heflin (25-20) placed 5th and scored 8.0 team points. Quarterfinal - Reese Moore (Forest City) 19-9 won by fall over Heflin  (Fall 3:39). Cons. Semi - Heflin received a bye. Fifth Place Match - Heflin won by fall over Joshua Kew (Hampton-Dumont) 19-26 (Fall 5:02)

•170 - Buck Weaver (14-23) placed 4th and scored 11.0 team points. Quarterfinal - Weaver won by fall over Connor O`Tool (Clear Lake) 11-12 (Fall 1:17). Semifinal - Dylan Koresh (Charles City) 30-8 won by fall over Weaver (Fall 2:24).  Third Place Match - Bryan Flores (Hampton-Dumont) 22-19 won by fall over Weaver (Fall 3:56).

220 - Rafe Van Dusseldorp (4-4) placed 3rd and scored 16.0 team points. Quarterfinal - Van Dusseldorp 4-4 won by fall over Jace Cajthaml (Charles City) 6-9 (Fall 2:20).  Semifinal - Kade Hambly (Clear Lake) 28-5 won by fall over Van Dusseldorp  4-4 (Fall 0:47). Third Place Match -  Van Dusseldorp  won by fall over Jett Nehls (Osage) 11-19 (Fall 3:03).  Second Place Match - Wyatt Folkerts (Hampton-Dumont) 29-10 won by fall over Van Dusseldorp (Fall 3:30).
