Tough week for boys soccer team

It was a tough week for the Clear Lake boys soccer team. The Lions dropped three contests to quality opponents, putting their record at 3-3. Fans can cheer on the Lions this Friday, as they host Garner-Hayfield-Ventura.  On Monday, May 3, Hudson will come to Lions Field.

W-SR 7, CL 3

The Lions  traveled to Waverly and ran into a good fundamentally sound team Tuesday, April 20.  Clear Lake  had a hard time adjusting to their speed of play in the first half and dug a hole they could not recover from.

“We went toe to toe with them for the first 20-minutes of the first half, but when they got their first goal, they added up quick to a 7-0 halftime lead for Waverly,” said Coach Zach Hall. “At halftime we made some adjustments on our play and focused on winning the second half.”

The second 40-minutes was much better and an even game. The Lions were able to play composed and competitive soccer and score a couple of goals.

Freshman Kinnick Clabaugh collected two goals and added an assist, along with senior Noah Peterson’s goal and assist. Matt Moore added an assist, as well, and junior GK Hunter Trenary had 11 saves on the night.

Webster City 4, CL 2

The Lions were on the road again Thursday, this time at Webster City.

“We played a decent first half that was a physical battle.  We were able to break the tie on a nice through ball from Kinnick Clabaugh  that Travaughn Luyobya finished past the keeper,” explained Coach Hall.

Clear Lake kept the momentum in the second half when the Lynx scored shortly after the break and put three more in before Kinnick Clabaugh put in a late goal.  The game ended with a 4-2 score in Webster City’s favor.

Humboldt 6, CL 2

Humboldt came to Clear Lake Monday, April 26, with only one loss.  The Wildcats added to their win column with a 6-2 victory.

“We played a pretty decent first half with several good chances at goal, but we were unable to find the back of the net,” said Coach Hall.

Humboldt had a couple good chances, as well, and scored on a breakway and penalty kick to go into half time up 2-0.

The Lions came out strong in the second half and were able to get a quick goal back, as Travaughn Luyobya was fed nicely by the passing of Kinnick Clabaugh and Noah Petersen.

“The heat and short bench tired us out in the second half and Humboldt capitalized scoring several times in the second half,” said Hall.

Kinnick Clabaugh was able to catch the Humboldt keeper out of goal and chipped in a 35-yard goal on a nice pass from David DeJesus, but it was too little, too late.
