The Clear Lake girls soccer team left it all out on the field last week, as they battled consecutive nights against physical opponents. The Lions claimed a 3-0 victory Thursday over Mason City, but fell just short against Decorah the next night. The Vikings snatched a 1-0 victory in double overtime.
CL 3, Mason City 0
The county rivalry game between Clear Lake and Mason City was as intense and physical as expected. But in the end the Lion defense, with Chelsey Holck in net, shut out the Mohawks, 3-0.
“I told the girls going in it was going to be a defensive battle and we needed to capitalize on the chances we will get. And that’s exactly what Brooklyn Eden did,” explained Coach Greg Jennings.
Eden found the corner of the goal to put the Lions up 1-0 at half.
Going into the second half the Lions kept the pressure on and Darby Dodd found her way to goal twice to put the Lions up 3-0. The score held until the final buzzer.
“Our defense again had themselves a night,” said Jennings. “The Mason City offensive pressure kept coming, but goal keeper Chelsey Holck was dialed in.”
Holck ended the night with a season-high 19 saves to lead the Lions to another shut out.
Decorah 1, CL 0 (2OT)
Friday night the Lions hosted Decorah.
“It was a good all around game. The girls played well in despite the physical game they played the night before. It’s hard to go back to back nights,” said Coach Jennings. “This game takes every thing you can give and then some.”
The Lions found themselves tied at the end of regulation, 0-0. After one half of overtime, the Vikings found the net for a sudden death goal three-minutes into the second overtime.
“I’m proud of these girls,” added Jennings. “I ask a lot out of them and they just battle. They never quit playing. A team like this makes the job easy for Coach Korenberg and myself.”
