Harbourage under construction, 1971 - It was a beehive of activity in 1971 as construction was underway on 22 additional units at the Harbourage, located on North Shore Dr.  According to Chuck Crane, a partner in the Harbourage, the project was to be completed by the first of the year.  Twenty-three units were occupied by families, Crane said.

October 1996

A Clear Lake City Councilman is putting his money where his mouth is in spearheading a fund drive to build a new garage for the city’s police cars.  At-large Councilman Dick Hughes has been setting aside the $25 per meeting fee given to Council members for all of his 11 years in office.  He announced he will give the approximately $7,000 he has saved to the city for the construction of a four-stall garage.

U.S. Senator Tom Harkin visited the Area Two Automotive Technology Center at Clear Lake High School.  He met with high school students from North Iowa Area Community College’s Automotive Technology Program.

Clear Lake High School’s Spirit Train, a caravan of students in cars following the Homecoming coronation ceremony, will likely be parked next year due to poor behavior by the students.  Students were reprimanded for throwing eggs and water balloons and for having passengers in the back of pickups.  It is believed the Spirit Train was started in the late 1970s after the practice of class floats was discontinued.

The level of Clear Lake continued to drop.  The new level measured -3.36” below the weir.

Bob and Jill Branstad, Clear Lake, are proud to announce the adoption of a baby girl born March 18, 1996.  They have named her Keely Ann Marie Branstad.  She has one brother, Jake.

The only person more tired than the Ventura football team had to be the scorekeeper.  A deep Greene team remained unbeaten as they wore Ventura down in a 70-30 victory.  The first half was close, before a worn out Ventura team lost ground.  Will Pueggel had three catches for 33-yards and he had 26 tackles on defense.  Jared Ringus led the ground game with 126-yards on 21 carries.

The Clear Lake cross country team competed in their last regular meet of the year at Eagle Grove.  Twenty-four teams competed.  The girls finished 10th and the boys placed fifth in 11 team pools.  Running a 12:58 for the girls was Erin Oelschalger, who placed 13th. Tom Zirbel ran another great race, placing third with a time of 16:42.

Summer is over, but softball is still on the minds of the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Association.  Four Clear Lake players ranked among the state’s leaders.  Those earning honors were Krista Fritz, Kristin Keefe, Erin Pleggenkuhle and Liz Jaben.

At a late press deadline two last-minute candidates joined “Nibbs” Nesbit in the race for Mayor.  They are present Mayor Dale Pattschull and a newcomer to the political scene, Donald (D.J.) Mangan.

Mrs. James Fatland has purchased the Lake Cafe from Esther Doolittle and took possession Oct. 1.  She formerly operated the Aero-Room at the Airport and has cooked at Halford’s, Shady Beach and the Silver Boot.

Sue Ritter was crowned Clear Lake High School’s 1971 Homecoming Queen.  Elaine Suby was crowned Ventura’s Homecoming Queen.

John A. Lober will be ordained into the office of the Holy Ministry and installed as the new pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura.

The Clear Lake Lions fell to Humboldt, 20-9 Friday night.  Dick Erickson and Tom Joslyn both had fumble recoveries and Bill Larson had an interception.

October 1956

The congregation of the Clear Lake Methodist Church will attend their first worship service in their new edifice Sunday, Nov. 11, the Rev. W.R. Noland, pastor, announced.

New owners of the Blue Horizon Motel are planning to build a “gigantic” meeting room at the motel, reportedly on top of the present 30-unit structure.

Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Yeager returned after attending the Iowa-Hawaii football game at Iowa City Saturday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. George Klassen entertained 30 guests at a Halloween costume party at their cottage, “Idlewold.”  They were entertained by a magic show.

B. Dayton Merriman, former publisher of the Clear Lake Mirror Reporter, has purchased a partnership in The Marion Sentinel at Marion, Iowa.

Miss Ruth Toppin, Unique Beauty Center, and Mrs. Warren (Betty) Jacobson of Jacobson’s Beauty Base attended a two day hair dressers clinic at Cedar Rapids.

October 1931

Rawlins Perkins and Rae Wallace spent the weekend with John Perkins at Ames.  They attended the Homecoming football game Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Arleigh Eddy spent the past week in Chicago attending the city series of baseball between the Cubs and the White Sox.

Harold H. Crane will return from Iowa City where he has been the past month receiving treatment for his hand at the State University Hospital. He comes home much improved and will resume his position in the First National Bank.

On Saturday Miss Lucille Winnie celebrated her fifteenth birthday by inviting in 16 of her girl friends to a 1 p.m. luncheon and prizes award in Court Whist.  A family dinner was served at 6:39 p.m.
