The Clear Lake City Council has lent its support to a letter asking the All Veterans Social Center Board to delay demolition of the former social center, building, however, it appears the plea may be too late.  The All Vets board has already contracted to have the structure razed.

Midwest Engineering Inc. (MEI), a tenant in the former Unisys building owned by the city, is facing the sale of a portion of its equipment and has fallen into arrears with the city.  Riverside Bank has offered the city $5,500 to store MEI equipment until a sale later this month.  The Council accepted the offer, but noted it appears unlikely the city will recoup any funds for back rent from the equipment sale.

City employees represented by Teamsters Union 828 are asking the city for a 10 percent wage increase over two years, while the city has countered with an offer of two percent per contract year.

David Baker plays Nathan Detroit and Kyle Smith will play Sky Masterson in Clear Lake High School’s production of “Guys and Dolls.”  The show is slated for Nov. 8-9.

Unique Christmas decorations and homemade baked goods and candies will be featured at the Holiday Festival on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the First Congregational Church in Clear Lake.

The Clear Lake High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosts Dan Mason as special guest for its kick-off on Sunday, Nov. 10.

The Clear Lake boys cross country team was back at State Saturday for the first time since 1988.  Team members include Matt Otis, Leif Kennedy, Nate Otis, Dean Walston, David Oelschlaeger, Tom Zirbel and Landon Plagge.  Zirbel led the pack of Lion runners finishing ninth out of 130 participants with a time of 16:34.  Oelschlager was second to cross the line for Clear Lake.  He placed 81st with a time of 17:53.

The Ventura Vikings ended their season on an up note Saturday, defeating Rockwell-Swaledale, 16-7, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.  All Class A, District 10 teams played their final regular season games under the Dome.  The offensive line created some running room for backs Jared Ringus and Mike Menke.  Ringus tallied 130 yards on 24 carries, while Menke had 53 yards on 18 carries.  Quarterback Luke Brager completed one of seven pass attempts.  Will Pueggel paced the team in tackles and he had a fumble recovery.

The Clear Lake Lions ended the regular season with a 27-6 victory over Humboldt, bringing their record to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in the district.  Scott Lester led the Lions with 122 yards in 11 rushing attempts.

Joe Scribbins received the honor of State Champion at the Punt, Pass and Run Competition held in Cedar Falls.  Scribbins, who placed first in the 13-year-old division, competed against 44 boys that had advanced from regional competitions around the state.

October 1971

Burdelle Martin, manager of Fareway Store, was elected chairman of the Clear Lake Retail Committee.  Ken Short, of Houck Drug, will serve as his co-chairman during the next year.

About 30 girls are out for girls field hockey, a new sport at CLHS, according to Miss Karen Anderson, coach.  The girls placed fourth at the State Field Hockey Meet held at the University of Northern Iowa.

Four Clear Lake Cross Country runners were entered in the State 2-mile team Race at Marshalltown last Saturday according to Coach Dave Suntken.  Competing were Steve Haxton, Greg Nicholas, Byron Allison and Craig Humburg.

Haddy’s Sport and Hobby Shop, 312 Main Ave., Clear Lake, has snowmobile suits in both kids and adult sizes for $22.95-$29.95.  They also have helmets for sale, metal flake are $17.95 and stars and stripes are $21.95.

October 1946

With about 1,600 persons attending the Homecoming Game Friday night with the victory of the Lions, 16-0, over the Algona Bulldogs it was the largest Homecoming crowd ever.

Jesse Buttleman, chief of police, and his men are wearing brand new blue serge uniforms these days.

S. Kennedy needs potato pickers.  Truck leaves Lincoln School corner every morning at 7:45 a.m.  Several weeks of work at $6 a day.

C.F. Crane has sold his interest in the Page and Crane Lumber Co. to Harry Page and Floy Page Lovell.  The lumber yard has been on Main Street over 53 years.

Republicans sweep the county.  Gov. Blue holds steady lead of Dem. Miles.

Clear Lake is indebted to Bill Ward for his fine gesture in donating a free parking lot for the use of shoppers next year.  The property recently purchased by Mr. Ward on South Fourth Street, behind Miller Hardware, will be cleared and used for much needed parking space.

60 Years Ago

October 1961

A period of less than one hour Sunday saw one of the worst series of auto accidents in the history of this community when 17 persons were hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries.  All of the victims were from out of town.

The water level of Clear Lake dropped to 24.84 inches below the outlet dam according to Keith Law, City Clerk.  Heavy rains starting Tuesday are expected to raise the level.

Over 500 kids showed up for the Kiddie Pet Parade sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

A bolt of lightning struck the bell tower of the Congregational Church during the height of an electrical storm causing considerable damage to the roof.  Clear Lake firemen broke through the ceiling of the balcony and extinguished the fire.

Star Club met Friday.  The group was treated by Miss Alma Tokle who showed colored pictures of her trip to Miami, Fla.
