(Above) Farmers in 1972 go on a trip - The Ventura-Clear Lake area adult farmer class took 35 farmers from this area to Minneapolis, Minn. in 1972.  The group toured the Grain Exchange, Midland Cooperative Facilities, and Hamm’s Brewery.  Tim Trees, Voc Ag Instructor at Ventura, expressed the group’s appreciation to Ventura State Bank and the Clear Lake Bank and Trust Company for chartering the bus; and to Production Credit Association for the noon meal at the Exchange Cafeteria.  Those attending were: Tim Trees, Rich Dougan, Jerry Watson, Foster Behl, Earl Hyde, Melvin Luscomb, Bob Olson, Pat Marshall, Helmar Svendson, John Ashland, Delbert Watson, Arnold Pueggel, Wilbur Schmoll, Merle Kudolph, Bob Black, Wayne Toppin, Johnny Schwichtenberg, Don Luscomb, Ray Oulman, Virgil McCabe, Fred Gram, Bill Hiscock, Dick Eibey, Orval Butenhoff, Allen Peterson, Calvin Anderson, Bob Cash, Ray Christensen, Jerry Hepperly, Bob White, Wayne Badker, and Ed Winkleman.

April 1997

Dr. Michael Teigland has been chosen to succeed Dr. Steve Voelz as superintendent of Clear Lake Schools.  The school board finalized Teigland’s $78,000 salary package Monday night at the school board meeting.  He will begin his new duties July 1.  Teigland has served as superintendent of the Sheldon School District for five years.

A weekend wind, rain and snow storm left North Iowans in the cold, with 60-plus mph winds.  The high winds helped to open the lake Saturday and sent water splashing onto the shoreline in the Outlet area, coating the bridge with thick ice.  Equipment used to gauge the level of the lake was a victim of ice heaves.  The pipe which extends into the water and serves as a meter reading the lake level was forced onto the shoreline by the ice this winter.  It is not know when, or if, that equipment will be repaired.

Clear Lake School officials sent notes home with students last week after it was learned strawberries they ate in February and March school lunches may have been contaminated with the Hepatitis A virus.

  Ventura High School students will perform the 1930s comedy, “You Can’t Take it With You,” Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon in the high school gymnasium.

Tickets are on sale now at the Surf Ballroom for “Three Dog Night.  The concert will be held on April 25.  Also coming to the Surf is REO Speedwagon.

The Ventura Jazz Band earned a fourth place finish at the State Jazz Band Championships held in Des Moines.  Brandon Wind and Will Pueggel were honored with outstanding soloist awards.

Clear Lake Computers, owned by Judi and Clint Stevens, were welcomed as new members of the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce.  The business, located at 503 1/2 Main Ave., sells computer software, hardware and does repairs.

The Ritz Club will be opening on April 14.  The Kerns welcome you back.  

Mike Spratt, Clear Lake, has earned the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to scouts, the Eagle Award.

Eight Mighty Lions youth wrestlers participated in the 1997 AAU Iowa State Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids.  Three Mighty Lions placed in the tournament, while many others were just shy of the medal rounds.  Tim Molencamp was runner-up in B-120 class. Ryan Molencamp finished fourth in the C-152 class.  Ben Dickerson was fifth in C-185.

March 1972

The Clear Lake Jaycees annual Easter Egg Hunt has been postponed until a later date due to the snow.

Don Duesenberg has purchased Elm Bend, located on North Shore near Ventura, and will take possession April 1.  The new business will be called D&S Sports Incorporated.  The business consists of a cafe and three cabin units.

Martha Johnson, a 1971 graduate of Clear Lake High School, and a freshman at Stephens College, was selected as a member of the college’s Campus Sing group that performed at the White House on March 19.

Sue Hoversten and Steve Erickson will play the lead roles of Golde and Tevye in the Clear Lake High School musical, “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Rich Chapman, a CLHS junior, has been named to the All State Honorable Mention list by the Des Moines Register and the Iowa Daily Press Association All State Team Second Team.  He averaged 20.4 points per game.

March 1947

Jack Yeager and Supt. Burns expect to leave for Richmond, Ind., to pick up the new bus.  This will give Clear Lake two new school buses.

The Hometown Party was held at the Surf.  It was a success with approximately 500 attending.  There was dancing and visiting with a circle-two-step called by chairman M.A. Hintzman as the highlight of the evening.

Sid Halford told the Lions Club about his trip to England.  He showed them his Christmas card with postage of $1.60.  He said he wore two suits of underwear and his teeth still chattered.

Dance at the Surf to Dale Simons old time orchestra.  No liquor is permitted.  Only $1.24 all tax included.

March 1932

The C.P. McVicker grocery store in the Rasmussen building on Main Street, has changed hands the purchasers being C.F. and F.O. Iverson, of Belle Plaine.

The Watkins Cafe will be open to the public today.  The rooms have been remodeled and equipment rearranged to care for the large patronage this cafe enjoys through the summer.

Mr. and Mrs. George Knutson and son, Stanley, returned from a delightful two weeks’ motor trip through the south, their destination being Port Isabelle and Brownsville, Texas.

The gown worn by Mrs. Burdette Bailey to the Civic League Colonial Party, held in the I.O.O.F. Hall attracted considerable attention.  The gown was a black silk taffeta that is almost 100 years old.  The gown was in splendid condition.
