Girls tennis team competes in Regionals
Clear Lake’s girls tennis program concluded its season last week with Regional individual and team competition.
Regional Individuals were held on May 11 at Waverly.
The Lions’ number one singles player, Aimee Groenenweg, posted a first round win over Keyla Martinez from Webster City, 6-0, 6-4, but dropped a hard-fought second round match and was eliminated. Against Kristi Kjome-Johnson, of Decorah, Groenenweg claimed the first set, 6-4. Kjome-Johnson returned the favor by the same score in the second, sending the match to a tiebreaker. Kjome-Johnson escaped with a 9-7 victory to claim the match and advance.
Ashlyn Fread also competed in singles for the Lions. Fread was sidelines by Lauren Wood, of Iowa Falls, 1-6, 1-6.
“It was a hot day, so that was a lot for the girls to play in,” said Coach Cat Aragon-Bauer. “Aimee did a very good job playing against tough Decorah competitor. Ashlyn played a tough game too, but came up short against Wood.”
Clear Lake’s doubles team of Macey Brant and Lilliana Rodriguez were pitted against Skrade and Holland, of Decorah and were defeated, 1-6, 0-6. Emily Roberts and Haley Jackson were eliminated by Winters and Johnson, of Iowa Falls, 3-6, 1-6.
Team Regionals
Aplington-Parkersburg swept the Lions 6-0 in Regional team play Saturday, May 14, at Waverly. Groeneweg, Brant and Rodriquez were the only Lions to take games from the Falcons. Groenenweg fell, 4-6, 3-5, to Kaitlin Cuvelier, while Brant lost, 1-6, 4-6, to Alexis Hoogestraat. After an 0-6 start, Rodriquez went 1-6 in the second set, giving Courtney Alberts the win. Groenenweg’s match was cut short after A-P clinched a fifth win.
Doubles were not played because the first team to five wins is awarded the match, according to state rules.
A-P advanced to meet Decorah in the Class 1A Region 1 Championship Saturday.
