From ‘Golden Pond’ to Clear Lake

The wooden boat used in the famous movie, “On Golden Pond” was the centerpiece for the 18th annual Clear Lake Antique and Classic Boat Show Saturday. “Thayer IV” was recently restored by Sunrise River Boat Works, of Forest Lake, Minn.  It, along with other classic wood and fiberglass boats manufactured between the 1920s and 1960s were displayed on land and in the water.-Reporter photo by Chris Barragy.

City moves ahead with capital projects

The Clear Lake City Council will start the ball rolling for one of the major capital improvement projects budgeted for 2017 next week.

A request for proposals will be distributed to three local engineering firms interested in preparing and overseeing reconstruction of 14th Avenue North between North 8th Street and the east return of Logan Drive. The scope of services in the RFP includes field work, survey, design, special assessment plat and schedule, bidding and construction observation and administration.

Fourth of July celebration was a record-breaker

Clear Lake’s six-day July 4th celebration was a record-breaking event, according to Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tim Coffey.

“It was one of the best— the (Evans United Shows) carnival had its best stay in 43 years.  I was told the parade crowds were the largest, fireworks were the best.  It was a very successful year,” Coffey told the City Council Monday night.  He estimated crowds at 70,000 plus.

(Above) A new way to catch a plane - Akro-flying champions teamed up for an exciting event at the National Air Show staged at the Mason City Airport in 1966.  In the photo a steel-nerved TV movie stunt man, Reds Didget, transferred from the hood of a new high-speed convertible onto a 12-foot rope ladder hanging from a “souped up” plane, that was flying overhead at 100 miles an hour.
