Mathews named NIC Player of the Year; three earn conference honors

 

Three Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball players were named to NIC All-Conference volleyball teams.

A major highlight for the team was junior Emily Mathews being named the NIC Player of the Year.

“Emily is a true all-around player and being recognized as Player of the Year by the conference coaches is a real honor,” said Coach Tracy Schmidt.  “I would like to congratulate both her and her teammates 

because this recognition is both an indication of Mathew’s talent and the players she has around her.”

CL cross country teams work on running strategies

 

 

Clear Lake’s cross country team are continuing to improve their times and running strategies heading into the stretch of the high school cross country season.  Last week the Lions were at Eagle Grove to compete in an 11-team meet.  The Lions were slated to compete in the North Central Conference meet Tuesday, Oct. 9.  Those results will appear in next week’s Mirror-Reporter.

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock Cross Country team has been setting the courses on fire this past week, placing third at one meet and bringing home championship honors at another.

Bragging rights belong to Clear Lake

 

Clear Lake won bragging rights in their first meeting on the football field with Mason City after 82 years. The Lions broke open a scoreless game though two quarters with 34 points in the second half.   An estimated 6,000 fans watched the Lions 

Great season comes to a painful close

 

Clear Lake’s record breaking baseball season came to a close Wednesday, as Decorah upset the number three ranked Lions, 5-4, in the Class 3A, Sub-State 2 final in Charles City.

 

Wildcats dominate Lions in NCC softball action

After a week off from action, the Clear Lake girls softball team was back in action Monday night, June 11.  The Lions hosted Humboldt (10-5) in a North Central Conference matchup.  This week the Lions are at Webster City tonight

(June 13) for another NCC tilt, then will host Mason City Thursday and Eagle Grove Friday.

Mathews earns medal in 100 hurdles

Five Ventura high school students got to wear the blue and gold one more time at the 2012 State Track and Field Championships held Thursday-Saturday, May 17-19, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.  The five athletes represented VHS

Conference runner-up honors go to CL girls

     Bishop Garrigan squeezed past Clear Lake 357-359 to capture the North Central Conference title Monday at River Road Golf Course in Algona.  Garrigan’s Alexa Capesius was the medalist with a round of 80.  Clear Lake’s Meg Monson was runner-up with an 82.
    The two teams were heads and shoulders above the rest of the conference field.  Third place Humboldt finished 68 strokes behind the Lions with a score of 427. 
    The Lions also received a 90 from Malorie Fischels, 93 from Lexi Lovik and 94 from Taylor Berger.

CL boys pick up triangular victory at home; fall to Clarion-Goldfield

Clarion-Goldfield Meet
    The Clear Lake boys golf team had their hands full at a triangular held at Clarmond Country Club in Clarion on Tuesday, April 17.  Clarion-Goldfield topped Clear Lake and Webster City in the North Central Conference showdown.

Vavrik leads G-H/V trapshooting team to championship

 The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura trap shooting team took top honors at the Mohawk Invitational held at the Ventura Gun Club on Saturday, April 14.  Eighty-seven area high school trap shooters participated in the event.
    The G-H/V team scored 227 out of 250 for the win.  Mason City Black was second with 223. Mason City Red scored 220 and Denver finished with 219.
