Vikings top Panthers in home contest

The Ventura boys had their ups and downs in basketball action last week, picking up one win and dropping two.

    The game came down to the wire for the Ventura Vikings Monday night, Jan. 6.  Unfortunately, Lake Mills came out on top of the close match-up.

Lions top Bulldogs, 64-33

The Clear Lake boys basketball team ended the first half of its season on the upswing, winning their last two games to even their record at 3-3 heading into the holiday break.  
    Tuesday, Dec. 20, the Lions hosted Hampton-Dumont.  They broke the game wide open in the fourth quarter with a 16-0 run to win, 64-33.

Lions stopped one game short by Go-Hawks

 

The third time wasn’t a charm for Clear Lake in the Class 3A Sub-State final against Waverly (22-4).  The Go-Hawks made 21 of 27 free throw attempts, compared to just 11 of 14 for the Lions, on their way to a 65-55 victory Monday night at the McLeod Center on the UNI campus in Cedar Falls.

 

Six wrestlers advance to District meet; team places second

 

The Clear Lake wrestling team placed second at Saturday’s Sectional meet and advanced six wrestlers to the District meet next week at Hampton.  Osage captured the Sectional title with 233 points.  Clear Lake edged Forest City 198 to 194.  They were followed by Riceville/St. Ansgar with 164, Central Springs with 104 and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura with 50.

“We had a pretty good day.  Obviously, we would have liked to get more guys to Districts, but that is the way it goes.  We competed hard,” said Coach Gary Weber.  

Tough night for G-H/V grapplers

 

It was a rough night for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team when they met two powerhouse teams at the Newman Catholic duals on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Newman.

St. Edmond dominated the competition with wins over both Newman Catholic and G-H/V.  The Gaels topped 

CL girls split NCC games

 

The Clear Lake girls moved their record to 4-2 after splitting contests with North Central Conference teams.  Tuesday, Dec. 11, the Lions manhandled Clarion-Goldfield, 52-49, putting themselves in a tie for second in the league.  However, the chance to move atop the NCC eluded the Lions Friday, as St Ed’s posted a 53-34 win.

G-H/V girls drop a game in double OT

 

It was a tough week for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls, as they dropped two close contests, one in double overtime.

You know it’s a closely matched game when it takes two overtimes to determine a winner.  Unfortunately, the Cardinals were the unlucky ones to come up on the bottom of a tightly balanced showdown with North Union on Tuesday, Nov. 27. 

Lions keeping pace with conference leaders

 

The Lions roared back to earn a five game victory at Algona Thursday, improving their record to 5-2 and keeping pace with the leaders in the North Central Conference.

The Lions lost the opening game at Algona, 25-23, but came back to win the next two, 25-20, 25-17.  The Bulldogs forced a fifth game by posting a 25-20 win, but the Lions won the final game, 15-11. 

Cardinals face number three rated Spirit Lake

It was a long night on the road for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura football team, as they fell 42-6 to #3 rated 2A Spirit Lake on Friday, Sept. 14.

“We made too many mistakes to win against a team like them,” said Coach Scott VanDusseldorp.  “We fumbled the ball inside the 15-yard line that they returned for a TD and we threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown.  We also need to do a better job of controlling the clock and finishing drives.”
