Deja vu start to the 2014 season for the Clear Lake baseball team

It was deja vu all over again for the Clear Lake baseball team. The Lions opened the 2014 season in the same way they started the 2013 campaign-- with a win at Charles City and a loss to Newman Catholic. Jones earns a trip to State Tennis Meet

Sophomore Sam Jones will return to the State Tennis Meet May 30-31.  Jones finished as the District Champion after going undefeated at Fort Dodge Thursday.  The Lions were second as a team with 19 points.  Fort Dodge St. Edmond won the District with 27 points.

Jones received a first round bye, but then went on to defeat Ben Albright, of St. Ed’s, 6-2, 6-1.  He was a 6-2, 6-0 winner in the semi-finals over a Denison player, then dominated in the finals, topping Caleb Perkins, from Iowa Falls-Alden, 6-1, 6-0.

Lions drop two; move record to 7-2

The Clear Lake boys tennis team went .500 in a busy week. The Lions topped Aplington-Parkersburg and Hampton-Dumont, but was upended by powerhouse Fort Dodge St. Edmond and Boone. The Lions are now 7-2.

 On Monday, May 5, the Lions hosted Aplington-Parkersburg. The Lions captured all but one singles match, posting an 8-1 victory.

Very good week for Lions

It was a good week for the Clear Lake boys soccer team.  Make that a very good week.  The Lions recorded two shutouts and claimed the championship at the Boone Tournament Saturday.

The Lions started the week by hosting Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Tuesday, April 22.  For the second time this season the Lions prevailed.  

CL boys win golf triangular

The Clear Lake boys golf team learned some important lessons in its first week out on the course.  The Lions earned a win in a triangular meet using the fifth best score tiebreaker, and then took on some of north Iowa’s and southern Minnesota’s best teams at Decorah.

Cardinals earn post-season recognition; Tusha named NIC Player of the Year

The 2013-14 basketball season was a successful one for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team.  The team finished as conference champions with a 13-1 record.  Individual players were recently rewarded for their hard work by earning post-season recognition for the North Iowa Conference.

Senior Maddie Tusha and junior Emily Spilman earned First Team recognition, while senior Shelby Rayhons was named to the Second Team and junior Mackenzie Haag earned Honorable Mention recognition.

Lions win Sectionals; send nine wrestlers to Districts

The Clear Lake wrestling team once again appears to be peaking at the right time.  The Lions won Saturday’s Sectional Tournament by 65 points over Forest City.

New football pairings assign CL and GHV to same class

Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura were both assigned to Class 2A District 2 in new football pairings released Thursday by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. The pairings are in effect for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Clear Lake, a perennial power in Class 3A, is dropping down a class size to join GHV, along with Clarion-Goldfield, Estherville-Lincoln Central, Forest City, Hampton-Dumont and Osage.

A tale of two halves for Clear Lake

Lions end strong with 39-12 win over Cowboys

For the second week in a row the Clear Lake Lions played drastically different halves of football.  And again, a strong second half broke open the game and resulted in a victory.  The Lions produced 232-yards of offense in the second half, compared to just 20 for Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, and posted a 39-12 win Friday to move to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Class 2A District 2.
