Garner-Hayfield/Ventura and Mason City face off in an Iowa Hall of Pride Challenge basketball game

 

Despite a lopsided score, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Head Girls Basketball Coach Matt Erpelding said he liked what he saw from his team on Friday, Nov. 16, when the Cardinals faced Mason City in an Iowa Hall of Pride Challenge.

 

Mathews named to Class 3A All-District Volleyball Team

Emily Mathews, a junior at Garner-Hayfield/Ventura High School, was recently named to the All-District Volleyball Team for the Class 3A Central District.

 

Mathews, a middle hitter, led Class 3A in kills per set with 4.9 per set, and she was third overall in total kills with 382.

Area football players named to INA All-State teams

 

The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2012 All-State Football selections Tuesday.  The elite lists included two Clear Lake and two Garner-Hayfield/Ventura players.

Clear Lake’s Bryson Hamilton was a 2nd Team selection among Class 3A players.  The 6’4”, 204-pound senior was named to the Second Team defense as a lineman.  Hamilton made 20 solo and 32 assisted tackles in Clear Lake’s 8-3 season.  

The season of giving begins

 

The 23rd annual Giving Tree is now displayed in the Mirror-Reporter office.  The tree displays the needs of local children and families during this holiday season.

Sign-up forms for the Giving Tree were distributed at Parent-Teacher conferences held in the Clear Lake School District.  They were also sent home with Ventura Elementary School students, as well as those attending Head Start and Lake Town Charlie Brown.  Questions regarding sign-up for the Giving 

Aerial truck will take department to new heights

 

The Clear Lake Fire Department welcomed a new 75-foot straight stick Sutphen Ladder truck Thursday, Nov. 16.   The new apparatus will become the CLFD’s first response vehicle to structure fires within city limits. The truck replaces a pumper “3303” purchased by Clear Lake in 1983 and currently in service. 

 

$1,000 prize offered for best holiday light displays in Clear Lake and Ventura

 

A $1,000 top prize awaits the winners in a Clear Lake and Ventura Holiday Lighting Contest.  The contest is sponsored by the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Ventura.

The contest, which also includes cash prizes for second, third and fourth place winners in each community, is open to residential properties only located inside the city limits of Clear Lake or Ventura. Each community will be judged separately. 

Students tip their hats to classmate recovering from head injury

Students at Clear Lake Middle School and High School tipped their caps Tuesday to a fellow student currently homebound as the result of a head injury.

Richard Scott

 

Richard L. Scott, Sr., 76, formerly of Clear Lake, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012 at the I.O.O. F. Home in Mason City, Iowa, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating.  Burial will be held in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to Richard’s service on Wednesday morning at the church.  

Gerald Lindsay

 

Gerald (Jerry) Lindsay, 85, passed away November 6, 2012 at Hospice of North Iowa. His body was donated to the Deeded Body Program, University of Iowa. A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at Clear Lake United Methodist Church on Monday, November 19 at 11 a.m., with visitation at 10 a.m.

Alana Enabnit finding success at collegiate level
