Lions blank Boone; fall to Grinnell

Undefeated and second ranked Grinnell was too much for the Clear Lake Lions Monday night in the UNI-Dome.  The Tigers advanced to the Second Round of the State Playoffs with a 33-10 victory.  

 

Cardinals beat Central Lyon/GLR; B-H/RV dominates in final game

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura football team had more than they could handle against Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in second round of the Class 2A playoffs.  The Nighthawk’s speed, depth and overall power led them to a 45-7 drubbing of the Cardinals.

Mathews named NIC Player of the Year; three earn conference honors

 

Three Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball players were named to NIC All-Conference volleyball teams.

A major highlight for the team was junior Emily Mathews being named the NIC Player of the Year.

“Emily is a true all-around player and being recognized as Player of the Year by the conference coaches is a real honor,” said Coach Tracy Schmidt.  “I would like to congratulate both her and her teammates 

because this recognition is both an indication of Mathew’s talent and the players she has around her.”

Area runners compete at State Cross Country Meet

 

The Class 3A State Cross Country Meet was held on Saturday, Oct. 27, in Fort Dodge.  Clear Lake had one individual runner competing in the meet, while Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock had two individual runners and the boys team competing.

Clear Lake’s  Antonio DiMarco finished in the middle of the pack, placing 66th in a time of 17:17.

Learning has never been more intense at Sunset School.  Police officers spent Monday at the vacant elementary school involved in training to prepare for the unthinkable.

Men charged in sexual abuse cases change pleas to guilty

 

Two men charged with sexual abuse involving a minor have changed their pleas.

David Powell II, 24, of Mason City, was charged with lascivious acts with a child, a class D felony, and sexual abuse in the third degree, a class C felony, after he allegedly arrived at a Clear Lake motel to meet a 13-year-old girl and encountered police officers instead.  

County Auditor’s office open Saturday for voting

 

The office of the county auditor will be open on Saturday, Nov. 3, for persons to vote by absentee ballot and to return their voted absentee ballots for the 2012 General Election.  In Cerro Gordo County, the auditor’s office will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on that date.

Lisa Foley-Luker

 

Lisa Anne Foley-Luker, 48, formerly of Clear Lake, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012 at her home after a short battle with breast cancer. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 26 at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Oct. 

25, from 5 - 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N 4th St. in Clear Lake. The family of Lisa would like to suggest that memorial contributions be made to the Clear Lake Public Library Foundation in her memory.

Jerome Frampton

Jerome W. Frampton, 80, of Woodbury, Minn., and formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012 at the Hometown Senior Living in Woodbury.  

A funeral service for Jerome was held on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012 at the Clear Lake Evangelical Free 

Church, Clear Lake, with Pastor Dan Jordan and Pastor Terry Baxter officiating.  Burial followed in the Clear Lake Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Clear Lake VFW Post 4868.
