Voter activity in county follows statewide ‘active’ trend

 

Voting activity is ahead of traditional benchmarks in Cerro Gordo County, according to Kenneth Kline, Cerro Gordo County Auditor and County Commissioner of Elections.

With the 2012 General Election two weeks away, 5,483 voters have requested absentee ballots in Cerro Gordo County, compared to 2,979 absentee requests at the same point in the 2010 gubernatorial 

election and from the 4,035 requests in the 2008 presidential election, reports Kline.

The pace is on track with the trend statewide.

Cardinals roll over Midgets in 41-20 victory

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura football team stretched their win streak to four, as they rolled over Estherville-Lincoln Central, 41-20, in a District showdown Friday night on the road.

“We came out a little flat and Estherville made us pay for it early,” said Coach Scott VanDusseldorp.

Cardinals sweep Rockford in final regular season match

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team ended their regular season with a sweep over Rockford on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

The Cardinals got off to a quick start, taking an 8-2 lead in the first match.  Behind the strong serving of Miranda Frederick, they stretched the lead to 19-6.  G-H/V went on to win the set, 25-14.

Lions go 4-2 at Algona Volleyball Tournament

 

The Lions dropped a 3-1 match with Humboldt Tuesday, but responded to the loss with renewed spirit and went 4-2 at Saturday’s Algona Tournament.

The Lions edged the Wildcats 25-23 in game one, but fell off their usual aggressive game and dropped the next three by scores of 25-13, 25-22, 25-18.   The loss put the Lions at 5-3 in North Central Conference play.  The team was slated to play their final home match of the regular season Tuesday, Oct. 16, against Webster City.

The Clear Lake boys and girls cross country team each claimed third place at the North Central Conference Meet held Tuesday, Oct. 9, at River Road Golf Course in Algona.  Five of the 14 varsity Lion runners earned all-conference honors by finishing in the top 10.

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country teams hit the week running, competing in a meet in Forest City on Monday, Oct. 8, and in the North Iowa Conference Meet on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Both the girls team and the boys team had successful outings at Forest City, with both teams capturing first place.  The boys won with a score of 48, while the girls were crowned champions with a score of 35.

Kathy Gallaher

 

Kathy Gallaher, age 60, of Joice, Iowa, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City, Iowa.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice with Pastor Bill Peters officiating.

Kathleen Fern (Hrubetz) Gallaher was born on March 9, 1952 in Mason City to parents Charles and Lucille (Knudtson) Hrubetz of Northwood, Iowa. She attended and graduated from Northwood High School, where she made many close and lifelong friends.

Broken light fuels motorhome fire

At approximately 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, Clear Lake dispatch received a call about a motorhome on fire at 217 Asbury Drive, at the intersection of Asbury and Fletcher near DAR Park.
