G-H/V boys soccer team falls to Humboldt Wildcats, 3-2

 

It was a hard-fought, aggressive match when the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team hosted Humboldt on Friday, May 10.  

The Wildcats found the net early in the game to take a 1-0 lead.  The Cardinals got on the board with a great throw-in from Alex Van Gerpen to Jimmy Ermer, 1-1.  

Lions earn runner-up honors at Hampton-Dumont Co-Ed Meet

 

Chandler Diercks and Jake Harle recorded a one-two finish in the long jump, then helped the 4x200 relay to a victory and the 4x100 relay to a runner-up finish at the Hampton-Dumont Co-Ed Meet Friday night.  

Diercks won the long jump with a mark of 22’ 3.25” and Harle jumped 20’ 9.50” to give the Lions their only points in field

One hundred sixty-nine runners took part in the annual Earth Days 5K and 10K runs in Clear Lake Saturday, April 13.

Player safety is cause for IHSAA to make pre-season football changes

The Iowa High School Athletic Association announced new guidelines for pre-season football practices last week in an effort to increase protection of athletes.

According to Clear Lake Head Football Coach Fred Wieck, the new regulations will not result in any major changes for the successful Lion program.

“ I think all rule changes that are for the safety of the kids are good,” said Wieck.  “We will have to change very little to abide by the new rule changes.”

Lions remain perfect with 82-63 win

The Clear Lake boys basketball team moved to 7-0 overall and in the North Central Conference with an 82-63 victory over Algona Friday, Jan. 3.

Lion grapplers win Webster City Tournament

The Clear Lake wrestling team went 4-1 and won the Webster City Dual Tournament Saturday, topping some large schools in the process.

“To beat Ankeny, 51-10, and Waterloo West, 49-25, is a real credit to our kids,” said Coach Gary Weber.  “We also beat a very good Webster City team, 33-23.   What I was most impressed with as a coach was all of our kids moving up a weight class to help the team win duals. They are very unselfish and team orientated, which is a real pleasure to coach.”

GHV players earn post-season honors

Following a successful season, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals football team was honored by having 10 senior players recognized as Class 2A District 2 All-District selections.

Earning First Team honors was:  Sahid Devora, defensive line; Braden Meints, linebacker, kicker and punter; Colton Knutson, defensive back; Nic Tusha, linebacker; and Shawn Murphy, defensive line.

CL volleyball team wraps up regular season

Clear Lake wrapped up its regular and North Central Conference volleyball season with a 3-1 loss at Webster City Tuesday, Oct. 22. 

The Lynx opened the match with 25-8, 25-15 wins before the Lions could get on the board with a 25-22 victory.  Webster City got the decisive third win, 25-11.

The victory gave Webster City the NCC crown.

GHV dominates Warhawks in 59-0 beating

Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (3-0) tallied another sound win Friday night against the West Fork Warhawks in a 59-0 shellacking. For the third-straight week, GHV, who is now rated number eight in Class 2A, has shutout its opponent, while also putting up big points in each showdown. 

“I am very proud of how the players played in this game,” said GHV Head Coach Scott VanDusseldorp. “We continue to improve and are fixing our mistakes.”
