The Clear Lake cross country teams had the chance to preview the course for the North Central Conference meet, racing at the Eagle Grove Invitational Tuesday, Oct. 8.  Based on their performances, the Lions should be very competitive at the NCC meet next week.

Clear Lake’s varsity boys team finished four in the nine-team field; the girls were ninth.

A week of ups and downs

 

The Clear Lake girls had an up and down week on the volleyball court.  

CL 3, H-D 0

The Lions opened the week with a strong North Central Conference win at Hampton-Dumont.  They downed the Bulldogs 25-16, 25-17, 25-19.

Mohawks stumble on Lion’s Field

 

Effective adjustments, probably combined with an impassioned halftime speech, lifted Clear Lake to a 41-20 victory over Mason City Friday night in the season opener for both teams.  

Cardinals fall to Warhawks in first round of Class 2A District action

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team faced West Fork, the champions of the Corn Bowl Conference, for the opening round of Class 2A District action on Monday, July 15.  

A much improved Cardinal team gave the Warhawks a much better game than the first go around when West Fork topped G-H/V, 10-4, on June 13.  Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the outcome was the same, 

but the score was much better at 2-0.

Cards stepping up mental toughness

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball team may not be seeing results in the win column, but the coach is seeing results in other areas of play.

Girls drop NCC games

 

After sparking their season with back-to-back wins a week earlier, the Clear Lake softball team dropped three contests with North Central Conference teams.

The Lions shoed defensive improvement, but their bats were silent in a 4-0 loss to Algona Garrigan Monday, June 3.  

G-H/V girls drop two close soccer contests

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team dropped two close contests last week.

Webster City 3, G-H/V 2

The Cardinals dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Webster City. 

“I am so proud of how our girls kept their head up and left it all on the field,” said Coach Josh Banse.  “All the girls are playing very well as a team.”

CL girls tennis team ends impressive season

 

The Clear Lake girls tennis team closed out its regular season with a pair of wins and a loss to highly-regarded Waverly-Shell Rock.  The Lions ended the season with an impressive 8-2 record.

For the second time this season the Lions posted a win over Webster City.  Coach Mary Jo Peterson noted the scores were closer this time, but the Lions prevailed, 9-0.  Despite the lopsided team score, several match scores were close.

CL boys golf team meets tough competition

 

The Clear Lake boys golf team managed to get in a pair of outings last week.  The Lions, now 5-7 on the season are at home Thursday for a quadragular including Algona, Iowa Falls and Newman Catholic.
