GHV Cardinals place fifth at N-P Tournament

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team placed fifth at the Nashua Plainfield Tournament held on Saturday, Dec. 14.  GHV scored 123 points in the 12-team tournament.  Clarksville won the event with 232.5 points, followed by Nashua Plainfield with 228 points.

“I am very proud of how we wrestled today,” said Coach Steve Smith.  “Placing fifth felt good because we are able to compete with other teams this year.”

Cardinals bring home championships from home cross country meet

It was busy week of running for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country teams, as they competed in two meets.

CL volleyball team battles strong opponents

 

The Clear Lake volleyball program opened home play Thursday with a daunting task-- competing against the reigning Class 4A state champions, Charles City, and battling county rival Mason City.  The Lions made the most of the challenge.  They showed improvement from game one to game two in a 2-0 loss to the Comets, and battled to a 2-1 win over the Mohawks.

Sheakly and Kockler play in All-Star Series

 

Gavin Sheakley and Jerry Kockler, from the State Champion Clear Lake baseball team, were chosen by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association to participate in the group’s All-Star Series played Aug. 8-11 at Valley High School in West Des Moines and Principal Park in Des Moines. 

Cardinals drop two close games

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team had a tough week, dropping two games by one run, to Central Springs and another to Emmetsburg.  The team was scheduled to play Central Springs on Saturday, July 13, but due to inclement weather, the game was moved to Monday, July 15 (results of that game will be published in next week’s edition of the Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter).

The Cardinals came out strong against Central Springs on Tuesday, July 9, but couldn’t hold on to the momentum.

CL golfers earn post season honors

 

The Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association released its post season honors this week.  Clear Lake’s successful girls and boys programs were represented.

Malorie Fischels, a CLHS senior, was named to the Class 4A First team All-State.  Teammates Paige Backhaus, a junior, and Megan Loux, a senior, were named to the Second Team.

Clear Lake softball team enjoys an upswing

The Clear Lake softball team enjoyed an upswing in the program last week.  The Lions battled to a tie with Hampton-Dumont, then posted wins over Waukon and Belmond-Klemme before losing to Charles City in a Saturday tournament.  The Lions are now 2-3-1 overall.

First win on home field for G-H/V girls

 

It was an exciting night for the Garner-Hayfied/Ventura girls soccer team, as they picked up their first varsity win in school history on Penneke Field.

The team topped Humboldt, 3-2, at home on Thursday, May 16.

“I could not be prouder of these girls,” said Coach Josh Banse.  “Our defense played the best game of the year, only allowing four shots on goal all night.  We are starting to make a lot of good decisions and things are starting to happen.”
