The music which usually accompanies carnival rides was silenced and a large crowd waiting to hear Arch Allies perform in the City Park Bandshell waited solemnly for over two hours Thursday, as rescue workers searched the lake’s waters between City Beach and the Sea Wall to recover the body of a drowned teenager.
 

GHV trounces Clear Lake

Emily Spilman scored three goals to lead a Garner-Hayfield/Ventura attack against the Clear Lake Lions Tuesday, May 19.  The Cardinals posted a 5-1 win.

“I felt we played a bit tentative in the first half. We didn’t challenge the ball effectively and we allowed too many Garner girls to split our defensive back line,” said Clear Lake Coach Nick DiMarco.  

The aggressive GHV play put the Cardinals ahead, 4-0 at half-time.

CL finishes third at NCC Meet

The Clear Lake boys golf team finished third at the North Central Conference Tournament played Monday, May 11, at the Algona Country Club.  The Lions’ Dane Waldron placed third with a (41-38) 79.  Humboldt’s Christian Birdsell also carded a 79.  Webster City, led by Avery Fuhs’ 78, won the team title with a score of 322.  Humboldt was second with 325 and the Lions posted a

Successful week on the road

The Clear Lake girls team won a pair of matches on the road last week, defeating Osage 6-3 and Charles City 6-3, and improving their overall dual record to 7-2.  In addition, the team finished third overall in conference play.

Number one singles Lindsey Loudenburg jumped out to an early lead for the Lions with her consistent play, recording a 10-7 win over Amber Schwarting.

Lions claim runner-up honors at home meet

Algona was the class winner of the eight-team field at the Lions Relays held Tuesday, April 14, in Clear Lake.  The Bulldogs ran away with the team title, amassing 196 points. Runner-up Clear Lake had 81 and Osage was third with 66.

GHV track girls compete in Bob Sanger Relays

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls learned they have some highlights to look forward to this season and some areas they need to improve as they opened the season at the Bob Sanger Relays, held in Britt, in Tuesday, April 7.

The team placed fourth in the five-team field with 105 points.  Northwood-Kensett won the meet with 178 points.

Three Clear Lake players earn All-NCC honors

Three members of the Clear Lake Lions have received All-North Central Conference honors.

The group was led by Matt Stephany, who was a unanimous First Team All-NCC selection.  The Clear Lake senior averaged 15.2 points per game and scored a team-high 319 points.  His fieldgoal shooting percentage (58.6) also topped the team.   He pulled own 119 

rebounds in 21 games played for an aver of 5.7 per game.  He recorded a team-high 21 blocks and dished out 77 assists during the season.

Lions still in hunt for NCC title

The Clear Lake boys (12-6) played one of their best and one of their worst games of the season within days.  The Lions took back sole possession of first place in the North Central Conference boys basketball race with a 59-56 win over Algona Tuesday
