Cardinal girls work to put complete games together

The GHV girls started the week with a loss, but bounced back with a pair of wins against North Iowa Conference opponents.  The Cardinals are now 12-5 overall and 11-5 in the league.

Team effort leads to Cardinal victory

Monday night’s victory at North Iowa for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team was a team effort.  When you can beat a team by 25 points, a lot of girls get to see action.

“The starters played very few minutes with each other and no matter what combination of girls we had on the floor, they all played well together,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.

GHV boys top Newman; fall to Eagles

It was a week of ups and downs for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team.  The Cardinals split a pair of games.

The Cardinals pulled off a tight game in the fourth quarter to top Newman Catholic, 61-49, on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Three Cardinals named to North Iowa Conference volleyball teams

  The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team had three girls named to North Iowa Conference teams for their volleyball performances this season.

Mackenzie Van Gerpen, a sophomore, was named to the First Team as an outside hitter.  Hannah Lau, a sophomore middle blocker, was named to the Second Team.  Mallory Van Oort, a senior, earned Honorable Mention recognition as libero.

Crowd lifts CL girls to new level

The Clear Lake volleyball team appears to be stepping up its game as the post-season approaches.  The Lions readied themselves for Regional play on Monday with a busy week against tough competition.  The Lions open Class 3A Region 3 play against Forest City Monday, Oct. 27.  Play will begin at 7 p.m.

Brant files papers to run for Ward 1 City Council seat

    Dana Brant, 1201 N. 5th St., has announced his candidacy for the Clear Lake City Council Ward 1 seat being vacated by Shane Cooney.

Ventura Board addresses changes

The Ventura School Board voted Monday to expand Rob Cassidy’s duties as principal from grades 5-12 to K-12.  Cassidy will receive no extra compensation for the work.

Another successful July 4th celebration

Clear Lake boasts the biggest and best Fourth of July celebration -- and 2011 was no exception.

Post-season girls soccer pairings

The Iowa Girls high School Athletic Union has released its Regional soccer pairings.

Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura teams will open the post-season Tuesday, June 2.  Clear Lake will take on Denver in the opening round in a 6 p.m. game at Denver.  The winner will play again at 6 p.m. Friday, June 5, in Denver.  They will meet the winner of the Aplington-Parkersburg vs. Webster City game. 

GHV boys improve record to 15-6

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys improved their season record to 15-6 after defeating Osage on Monday, May 4.  The Cardinals recorded a solid 167, while Osage posted a 184.

Medalist honors went to Grady Umbarger, who carded a 37.  

“Grady is playing excellent golf, shooting his third straight 37.  He is all about hard work and getting better,” said Coach Ken Krause.
