GHV wrestlers face tough competition at Riceville

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura grapplers faced some tough competition at the Riceville Invitational held on Saturday, Jan. 25.  Crestwood won the tournament with 171 points, followed by Forest City with 117.  GHV was sixth with 69 points in the eight team field.

Cade Baker, who wrestles at 160 pounds, was the top finisher for the Cardinals.  Baker opened the day by beating St. 

Ansgar’s Landon Johnson by techincal fall, 17-2.  By virtue of an injury default he claimed second place.

Work will begin on next Central Gardens building

    Work is expected to be begin this week on the new “Mother Earth Workshop” at Central Gardens of North Iowa.  Chip Kinsey, president of the Central Gardens Board of directors, said a special board

CL School Board candidate number jumps to four

    What a difference a week makes. 
    Last week, no candidates had filed nomination papers for the September School Board election in Clear Lake.  But as of Tuesday morning, Aug. 2, there are four candidates for the three seats up for election Sept. 13.

Chamber receives significant fireworks donation

    The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce has received a significant financial donation that will help establish a program to ensure the viability of its Fourth of July Fireworks for years to come.

GHV girls fall in OT; top Humboldt

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team picked up two wins and dropped a match in overtime in action last week.

Webster City 3, GHV 2 (OT)

The third time was not a charm for the GHV girls, as they dropped a very close match in overtime to Webster City on Monday, May 18.  The Lynx topped the Cardinals, 3-2.

“Webster City is a good team.  The wind was horrible and you could tell each half who had the advantage,” said Coach Josh Banse.  “Our girls played well, but just could not get the win.”

CL soccer boys tops three ranked teams

The Clear Lake boys soccer team moved up a spot in the rankings this week after topping three ranked teams and giving impressive performance at the highly-regarded Waverly-Shell Rock Tournament.  The Lions are now ranked fourth in Class 1A with a 8-2 record.  Their next match is Monday, May 18, at home against Mason City.  It will be Parent/Senior Night.

Jones racks up team points for CL girls

The Clear Lake girls track team finished fifth at the Indian Relays held at Forest City Tuesday, April 28.   Algona ran away with the team title with 178 points.  Iowa Falls was second with 102 and Central Springs and Forest City followed with 101 and 88.  

Freshman Lexi Jones had a pair of first place finishes in field events for the Lions.  She won the high jump by clearing 5’ and the long jump with a mark of 15’4”.

Lion golf team faces tough competition at Spencer Invitational

CL 155, GHV 174, Newman 179

Dane Waldron fired a 36 to lead Clear Lake (155) to a triangular win over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (174) and Newman (179) at Highland Park in Mason City Tuesday, April 14. 

Waldron was three shots better than teammate Thomas Storbeck for the medalist honors.  The Lions’ other three golfers, Jon Carew, Kyle Calaguas and Tanner Storbeck all finished in a tie for third in the medalist race with 40s. Anthony Piscopo also competed for the Lions and had a round of 41.

Lions claim runner-up honors at Cowboy Relays

The Clear Lake boys raced to a runner-up finish at the Cowboy Relays held Friday in Clarion.  A disqualification in the 4 x 200 proved costly for the Lions, as they finished second in the 2A division to Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, 121 to 116. Forest City was third with 104 points.

“They beat us by five, but we still had a very good meet,” said Lions Coach A.J. Feuerbach.

Faber named to INA All-State Girls BB Team

Clear Lake's Kaye Faber has been named to the Iowa Newspaper Association's 2015 All-State Girls Basketball Team.  Faber, a 5'11" senior, was selected as a member of the Class 3A Third Team.
