It was an exciting week for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team, as they picked up two big wins.

GHV 5, Hudson 4

The Cardinals pulled it all together on Monday night, April 20, and put together a 5-4 victory over Hudson.

Mason City tops Clear Lake in tennis action

Mason City edged Clear Lake, 5-4, in the first tennis meet of the season for the Lions, played Monday, April 6, at Mason City.

Cardinals top CAL in boys soccer showdown

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team kicked the season off on a winning note, capturing a 4-1 victory over CAL Community Monday night, April 6.

“I was really impressed with the boys, as they played very physical and aggressive,” said Coach Eric Williams.  “It’s also great to see the young guys step up and play hard and also to see the senior leadership we have by setting the younger players up to succeed.”

The Cardinals are starting three freshman and three more are playing key roles off the bench.

Lions claim NCC title; fall in District opener

It was a week of highs and lows for the Clear Lake boys basketball team.  The Lions captured their second straight North Central Conference title on the road Friday, but had their season ended Monday night at the hands of Lake Mills in the District Tournament opener.

CL 56, Webster City 54

The Lions had to earn their NCC title the hard way-- on the road.  They began by defeating Webster City (11-8, 7-6) Tuesday night, 56-54.  

GHV girls pull off close contests

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls pulled off two very close North Iowa Conference victories to end the week with a 13-5 conference mark and a 14-5 overall record.

GHV 48, North Union 45

The gym was rocking Tuesday night, Jan. 27, when the Cardinals traveled to North Union (10-5, 10-6) for a showdown that came down to the final seconds of the game.

The Warriors came out ready to play and took an early 16-9 lead.  The Cardinals battled back and got to within three at the end of the first quarter, 13-16.

Lions place third at Forest City

The Clear Lake wrestling team traveled to Forest City for the eight-team Forest City Invite Saturday. The Lions finished in third place, just 9.5 points out of first. Charles City edged Oelwein by a point to win the title. 

Four Lions claimed titles: Brennen Doebel, Ryan Schmalen, Ryan Leisure and Ryan Faught.  Leisure was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament after beating second ranked John Etherington, of Charles City, 5-0. 

Defense key to Lion victory

Clear Lake handled fifth ranked (2A) St. Ed’s, 66-42, Friday night, improving to 1-1 in the North Central Conference and 2-2 overall.

Coach Bart Smith credited his teams’ defense with setting up with the win.

CL cheerleaders to perform

The community is invited to come support the Clear Lake Cheerleading Competition Squad as they prepare for the 2014 Iowa State Cheerleading Competition. The squad will perform their routine for the public on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 5:30 p.m. in the Clear Lake High School Gymnasium.

Runners record best times of season at Algona Meet

Several Clear Lake runners recorded their best times of the season while competing at Algona Monday, Sept. 29.  The meet included 18-teams.  

Although they did not field a full squad, four freshman girls made quite a statement about things to come.
