Clear Lake woman killed in two-vehicle accident

A Clear Lake woman was killed in a two vehicle crash on the outskirts of Mason City Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Mary Stattelman, 81, of Clear Lake, was driving a Toyota Camry on 19th Street Southwest when her vehicle collided with a Ford pickup driven by 58-year-old Bradley Schermer, of Latimer, Iowa.

The accident, which occurred about one-half mile east of Eisenhower Avenue, was reported at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Stattelman was pronounced dead at the scene.

VMGC named 9-Hole Course of the Year

The Iowa Golf Association announced on Friday, Oct. 24, that Veterans Memorial Golf Club, Clear Lake, was named 9-Hole Course of the Year at the 2014 Annual Awards ceremony.

High speed chase starts at I-35

Four females were taken into custody after a high speed chase that began early Monday morning.

Authorities say the females were caught shoplifting at Walmart in Mason City at 4:50 a.m. and fled in a vehicle toward I-35. Clear Lake Police stopped the vehicle on Highway 122 at 5:02 a.m. and the females allegedly fled again.  The pursuit continued to Hardin County, where the vehicle was again stopped in the southbound lanes of I-35 near mile markers 144-147. The

 females then allegedly fled on foot but were apprehended by police.

Denny’s closes

Denny’s Restaurant, located in the Pilot Truck Stop on Highway 18 East, Clear Lake, has closed.  Denny’s officials have not responded to attempts for comment, however a 

sign on the restaurant doors encourages customers to visit other Denny’s sites.

IGNITE Clear Lake campaign receives matching grant

 The IGNITE Clear Lake Fireworks Endowment Campaign has received a $75,000 matching grant from John and Janis Ruan, of the Ruan Foundation. This will help the campaign close out its $150,000 remaining amount of funds needed to successfully end the campaign.

GHV sends 10 events to State Track competition

It was a big week on the blue oval for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys and girls track teams.  The Cardinals qualified 10 events, so there was a lot of action at the State Track meet for GHV fans to watch.

Chase Smith was the highest placing GHV competitor.  Smith placed fifth in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:45.77.  Another long distance runner, Logan Dahlbeck was 14th in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:37.00.

CL boys soccer tops Mason City, 4-1

Monday, May 18, was Senior and Parent Night at Lions field for the Clear Lake boys soccer team.  The group put on a show for fans, as they topped Mason City, 4-1.

“We have a talented class of seniors this year and tonight was about recognizing their contributions to the Clear Lake Soccer Program.  This is a fun evening for us, as we typically play several players in positions they seldom have a chance to play during the regular season,” explained Coach Matt Anderson.

Diercks claims third State title; Strong performances all around

Chandler Diercks earned his third State title in the long jump and his Clear Lake teammates turned in a number of strong performances at the Iowa Boys and Girls State Track meet held Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines.

  Clear Lake Coach A.J. Feuerbach said he was thrilled to get eight events and 10 kids back to State for the second year in a row  It was the first time the Lions have qualified four relays for State since 1992.
