The Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter will be holding a Holiday Giveaway and someone will become the owner of a 55-inch RCA LED Full High Definition television.

School Board expands early retirement incentive plans

The Clear Lake School Board, which has offered early retirement incentives to its certified (licensed) staff for a number of years, will now offer an early retirement opportunity for its classified employees, including custodians, bus drivers, para educators and cooks.

Reporter office closed Friday

The Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter office, 12 N. 4th St., will be closed Friday, Nov. 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.  

The office will re-open Monday, Dec. 1.  Friday’s closing does not affect deadlines for the next issue of the newspaper.

District will upgrade fleet with three buses; Substitute teacher service makes report

 Purchase of three school buses was approved at Monday night’s Clear Lake School Board meeting.
District leaders considered two different options to upgrade its aging fleet of buses. Ultimately the Board was to buy a new 77-passenger bus and two formerly leased 77 and 65 passenger buses. The cost for the three buses will be $207,600, however the District will trade in vehicles worth $45,000 to drop the cost to $162,600.

GHV girls basketball team falls to Mason City in Hall of Pride Scrimmage

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team kicked off the 2014-15 season by playing in the Hall of Pride Scrimmage Monday night, Nov. 17, against Mason City.

The Mohawks had the home court advantage and won the contest, 50-43.

Cardinals land six on All-District teams

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura football team had six players named to All-District teams for the 2014 season.

Named to the First Team was Conner Shaw, Gabe Umbarger, Logan Miller and Harley Forry.  Connor Smith and Corey Hauptmann earned Honorable Mention recognition.

Diercks signs with ISU

Clear Lake High School’s Chandler Diercks has signed a letter of intent to attend Iowa State University in the fall and compete on the Cyclones’ track team.  The two-time state long jump champion and Drake Relays champion said he will compete in the long jump and may try the triple jump event.

Eleven CL players land on First Team

Eleven members of the Clear Lake High School football team received First Team honors in Class 2A District 2 balloting by coaches conducted last week.

The Lions, who finished the 2014 season 10-1, were represented by five players on the First Team Offense and five on the First Team defense.  The Lions also had a player honored on the Utility list.

Leonard E. Washburn

Leonard Everett Washburn, 90, of Clear Lake, died Saturday Nov. 15, 2014, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family.
