Lions move one step closer with win

 

Clear Lake took a major step toward earning the Class 3A District 3 title with a 35-25 victory over sixth ranked Humboldt Friday night at Lions Field.  The No. 5 ranked Lions, who moved to 5-0, will host the only other undefeated team in the district, Webster City, this Friday.

CL volleyball team picks up impressive win

 

The Clear Lake volleyball team stormed back from an 0-2 start and recorded an impressive win over Bishop Garrigan, ranked 11th in Class 1A.  The Lions got the win on the road, 19-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 15-8.

Errors create narrow margin in GHV win

Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (4-1) defeated East Sac County (3-2) with a familiar display of physicality in a 13-10 win. The engine of the Cardinal’s power offense was restoked as 363-yards of offense was tallied in a game where luck favored the victors. But a lack of discipline nearly cost the Cardinals what should have been a decisive win over the Raiders. 

GHV volleyball team keeps rolling

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team kept things rolling last week, picking up a win against Belmond-Klemme and going 4-2 at the Bishop Garrigan Tournament.

 

GHV 3, Belmond-Klemme 0

Belmond-Klemme didn’t give the Cardinals too much trouble on Tuesday, Sept. 24, as GHV rolled in all three games, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-14.

“We knew BK was going to put up a tough block in the middle, so we focused on spreading out the offense,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.

     Ann Marie Anderson, 83, formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nev.   

Services are pending at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.

David R. Stange

 

David Ray Stange, 33, Clear Lake, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, from complication from a brain injury.

A funeral service for David will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at the Church of Christ Latter-Day Saints, 1309 South Kentucky Ave., Mason City, with Bishop Kevin Runolphson officiating.  Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy 18 West, Mason City.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

Esther E. Johnson

 

Esther E. Johnson, 90, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, surrounded by her loving family.

     A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 at the First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Brad Thornton officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to Esther’s service on Wednesday.  Inurnment will be Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013 in the Johnson family plot in the Highland Cemetery, in Eddyville, Iowa.

Lions roar back for a 35-14 victory over W-SR

 

Second half adjustments were the difference for Clear Lake in the Lions’ Class 3A District 3 opener played at Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, Sept. 20.  The Lions trailed 7-6 at halftime, but roared back for a 35-14 victory to improve to 4-0 overall.

Number five ranked Clear Lake struck quickly, scoring on their first play from scrimmage, but the remainder of the first half was filled with missed opportunities.

A week of ups and downs

 

The Clear Lake girls had an up and down week on the volleyball court.

The Lions opened the week with a strong North Central Conference win at Hampton-Dumont.  They downed the Bulldogs 25-16, 25-17, 25-19.
